Barca heartbreak

Time to bring in technology to help refs

Last updated: 08th May 2009

Barca heartbreak
I've always been against bringing technology in to help the officials, but when they're making the kind of mistakes that they have this week, I'm starting to think it might be about time.

Tubes
Quotes of the week

I was at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to watch what turned out to be a bitterly disappointing game between Chelsea and Barcelona, and that's putting it mildly.

The match as well as the reaction afterwards has dominated all the news this week and I have to admit that my heart sank at the final whistle.

I said the worst thing that could possibly happen was for Chelsea to go 1-0 up and then Barcelona to score in the last five minutes to win it on away goals and that's pretty much exactly how it played out, except they scored even later.

I really don't want to sound like I'm moaning, and I understand that referee's have a tough job, but I will never understand how he didn't give a penalty when Pique handled the ball in the area.

Forget the other three shouts - that was as clear cut a penalty as you will ever see. I was in the Matthew Harding stand so it happened right in front of me and I couldn't believe it when he didn't point to the spot.

If his view was blocked then Pique's reaction should have told him everything he needed to know because I've never seen a player look so guilty. And if he somehow missed that as well, what's the assistant referee there for?

They went from linesmen to assistant referees to do exactly that, assist referees, and yet the more I watch them the more I realise they just go along with whatever the man in black says.

Technology

I've always been against bringing technology in to help the officials, but when they're making the kind of mistakes that they have this week, I'm starting to think it might be about time, and I'm not just saying this from a Chelsea perspective.

Darren Fletcher looks like he's going to miss out on one of the biggest games of his career after being wrongly sent-off against Arsenal and same goes for Eric Abidal too.

They say these things even themselves out over a season, but I don't think that's a good enough excuse anymore.

Shopping

Anyway, even though it's hard to think of anything else but football at the moment, I'll give it a go!

I was supposed to go and interview Sam Raimi on Monday, but it fell through. It's a bit annoying because I was quite looking forward to it but I still made the most of the day by going shopping with my girlfriend!

I know it's a cliché, but there really is nothing worse then going shopping with a woman. I spent hours walking in and out of every single shop in Covent Garden and obviously we only came away with a couple of things!

Still, I can think of worst places than the women's changing rooms to spend a bank holiday Monday!

Tubes answers your questions

Tubes, you're a great man, but what I want to know is who is the funniest person you have ever met? Liam Davies(Everton fan)

TUBES SAYS:Up until this year I probably would have struggled to give you an answer on that one Liam because I've met so many funny people, but then I met Jim Carrey and that guy is on a different level! He had me in stitches throughout the junket and is just a great bloke.

First name Dan, second name Allen I'm 13 and got lyrical talent ooooooooooooh proper sick ya know. You're a great bloke, but what want to know is if you and big Ange made an album together what would it be called?Dan Allen (Nottingham Forest fan)

TUBES SAYS:Nice rap Dan. I think it would be called Tubes and Big Ange in a Tange-nt! Either that or Brotherly Love!

Tubes on the radio, radio in the car, with lyrics like these I won't get very far!....ohhh low confidence! Tubes, you're a great guy and I love you, but what I want to know is, what do you like better; tables or chairs? Cheers! Laff Jaff(Celtic fan)

TUBES SAYS:Hahahahaha. Those are some genius lyrics Laff! I particularly like the ...Ohhh low confidence part. In fact I might use that one day, that's how good it is! It has to be chairs mate! Tables are overrated I reckon. You can easily live without them, but you couldn't live without chairs. I love chairs so much I'm thinking of opening up a chair shop one day. I'd call it call it Laff, Jaff Chairs in your honour!
