Former Hull star eager to return to management

Windass eyes coaching role

Windass: Hull legend!

I've applied for a few jobs. Obviously everyone has heard about the Grimsby job which I applied for, but nobody has heard anything, or at least I haven't.

Quotes of the week

Dean Windass told Soccer AM he was eager to get back into coaching after an enjoyable, albeit brief spell with Darlington.

The former Hull and Bradford striker, who hung up his playing boots last month, was given the number two job with the Quakers shortly after Colin Todd took over as manager.

However, after just nine games in charge the duo were sacked by new chairman Raj Singh after failing to win a single game.

But, despite the unsuccessful spell with the north-east club, Windass revealed he was keen to make a return and feels the experience will prove invaluable in time.

"I really enjoyed it," he told Helen and Max. "I was always said that I wanted to be a manager one day and Colin gave me the opportunity.

"We only had two players when we came in because Darlington were obviously in administration. So we had to bring in 18 players and we knew it would be tough, but we just didn't realise how bad it would be!

"It was a good experience though and the players were fantastic, but unfortunately there wasn't a lot of money at the club and it's a results business.

"That experience has stood me in good stead because I know what goes on behind the scenes now. If you go straight into a manager's job then you don't know what to expect, but now I do.

"I've applied for a few jobs. Obviously everyone has heard about the Grimsby job which I applied for, but nobody has heard anything (back), or at least I haven't.

"I think the boys Woods has got the job at the moment and it's a tough task but let's hope Grimsby get out of the bottom two."

Media

The man who scored 'that' goal at Wembley to take Hull into the Premier League has also taken his first steps into a possible career within the media.

Windass has been working with our friends on Soccer Saturday and he says he is enjoying every minute of it, even if it a lot harder than it looks!

"I'm loving it. You're watching football matches and you're getting out of the house on the weekends as well. But it's really hard work.

"You've got people in your ear talking and they're saying put your tie straight, or your heads too shiny! Last week they told me that it was too shiny and said 'can you get something to wipe your head?'

"So there was a lady in front of me and I said 'excuse me love can I borrow a tissue please?' About five minutes later they said can you get a poppy from somewhere. So I've gone to the same lady "I'll give you a fiver for your poppy" so she did and she kept the money as well!"
