Five out of five

Roeder: 100 per cent record

I haven't inquired or applied for a job since Norwich. You wait until you feel that you're ready to get back involved.

Quotes of the week

Glenn Roeder says he has a one hundred per cent record when it comes to getting jobs he's applied for.

The former West Ham and Newcastle United boss has been out of work since leaving his post at Norwich City last January.

But he revealed he has not enquired or applied for a single vacancy in that period and will wait until he thinks the time is right to get back into management.

"David Pleat has a saying which is 'when you're in the game you want to be out of it, and when you're out of it you want to be in it,'" he told Soccer AM.

"Now that's not necessarily true but I know where he is coming from."

"I think there have been a number of managers who have been out of the game for two, two and a half years, and then suddenly reappear," he added.

"I haven't inquired or applied for a job since Norwich. You wait until you feel that you're ready to get back involved."

Impressive

The 54-year-old, who began life as a player manager at Gillingham, will be able call on an impressive CV when he does decide the time is right.

Spells at Watford and Burnley followed his introduction to management, before Glenn Hoddle moved quickly to bring him into his England set-up in 1996.

His first taste of life in the top flight came in 2001 when he replaced Harry Redknapp as West Ham boss and in 2006 he was handed the top job at Newcastle after a successful spell as caretaker manager.

An impressive CV is one thing, but coupled with the fact that he has never been turned down for a job, and Roeder is a man oozing confidence right now.

"I've been saying to people that I've only ever applied for five jobs," he said. "Come on Helen how many have I got?

"Five," replied the first lady of Soccer AM.

"Correct! And I didn't tell you that outside because it's the first time we met here this morning! Yeah five out of five, so I must be doing something right."

Passion

Like many professionals Roeder admitted he has been spending most of his time off on the golf course, but also revealed his newfound passion for horse racing.

The former Watford and Newcastle defender has recently bought a share in a race horse, and he explained how he and his wife came up with the name Neduardo!

"I've got a share in a racehorse which won this week at Southwell - that was my Cheltenham!" he said.

"My wife named it because she loves Eduardo the footballer. When he came back from his serious injury she saw him score a couple of goals and she suddenly turned and said 'Let's name the horse Neduardo'.

I said 'Faith why Neduardo? You like Eduardo but you don't want to use his name because you have to ask permission etc, so why Neduardo?'

"And she goes, 'well everyone knows that horses are called Neddies don't they?' So she's named the winner. The only trouble was I didn't have a bet on him!"
