The Golden Shoe and Espadrille
Last updated: 25th March 2008
We all love goals and those who know how to find the back of the net, but who is really the best at it?
Is it the player who scores the most, or the striker that always seems to pop up and score in the important matches?
Well here at Soccer AM we think the players with the best goals to games ratio should be recognised, which is why every week for the remainder of the season we will be bringing you the Golden Shoe and Golden Espadrille on the website.
The Golden Shoe takes into account all the players in the top four tiers of the English game while The Espadrille will be focusing on the top forwards from Italy's Serie A, Spain's Primera Division and of course our very own Premier League.
To qualify, players must have played in at least half of their side's matches this season and only league goals count.
The Golden Shoe
Cristiano Ronaldo has been labelled the best player in the world in recent weeks and on current form who could argue.
Three goals in two games against Bolton and Liverpool has seen the Portuguese winger increase his lead at the top of the Golden Shoe table and also break George Best's record of 32 goals in a season for a winger in all competitions.
Everton striker Yakubu earned the Toffee's a valuable point in their battle for fourth place with Liverpool. His 13th goal of the season put David Moyes' men 1-0 up against West Ham, but Dean Ashton's second half header gave the East London club a share of the points.
Kevin Phillips smashed in his 19th league goal of the season against Charlton to give West Brom a vital point in the race for the Championship title, meanwhile League Two leaders Swansea had Jason Scotland to thank for avoiding defeat after his brilliant double against Bristol Rovers.
The striker has now bagged 22 goals in just 38 games this season and he takes the place of Mansfield's Michael Boulding in The Golden Shoe table.

The Golden Espadrille
A rare goalless week for Sevilla's Luis Fabiano coupled with Cristiano Ronaldo's three goals this week means the fight for number one spot in The Golden Espadrille is as tight as ever.
The Brazil forward still leads the way with his incredible goal a game ratio, however United winger Ronaldo is just 0.07 behind him now with a ratio of 0.93.
Valencia's David Villa scored twice in La Liga as Ronald Koeman's side beat league leaders Real Madrid 3-2 at the Bernabeu. His 11th and 12th goals of the season mean he enters the top ten for the first time this season with Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi dropping out.
That defeat for Real means the gap at the top of La Liga is down to just four points after Barcelona thrashed Valladolid 4-1.
Meanwhile in Italy, Inter Milan's lead at the top Serie A was also cut to just four points after they lost 2-1 to Juventus. Juve striker David Trezeguet was amongst the goals and he moves up one place to eighth in the table.
