Up-and-coming Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme has agreed a two-year contract extension to keep him at Molineux until 2012.

The 22-year-old's deal was due to expire in 2010 but will be extended after a string of fine performances from the shot-stopper, which has also attracted interested from Premier League clubs.

A product of the club's academy, Ikeme has featured 11 times for the Championship leaders this term after dislodging Wayne Hennessey when the first-choice keeper was suspended for the Bristol City game.

He earned his Wolves league debut in the 2-0 win and then kept his place for the following 10 games before getting injured in the 3-1 victory at Sheffield United, which saw Hennessey return to the side.

Manager Mick McCarthy is delighted to have secured Ikeme - one of three homegrown keepers along with Hennessey and Matt Murray - on a longer deal.

Everything's fine

He told the Express & Star: "We've agreed a deal with Carl and everything's fine - it should be signed this week. He's done really well so I'm thrilled that he's agreed his contract.

"He's given Wayne Hennessey a lot to think about. He's certainly brought competition - he didn't just come in on a whim, he stayed in on his ability and only lost his place because he was injured.

"He's one of our bright, young players and he's a very good goalkeeper."

Chief executive Jez Moxey added: "We're delighted Carl has committed his future to the club. He's another of the large group who have come through our academy and gone on to make an excellent impact.

"With Wayne and Carl, and Matt when he returns, we feel we have three top quality goalkeepers who will keep us very well served in that department."
