Russell Anderson has been granted permission to remain with Plymouth Argyle until the end of the season.

The Sunderland defender's initial loan deal at Home Park expired after the Pilgrims' 2-1 win against Bristol City on Saturday.

He had been with the Championship club since mid-February and made seven appearances for Paul Sturrock's promotion-chasing side.

His excellent form out on loan has earned him a recall to the Scottish national side and he could feature in George Burley's first game in charge against Croatia on 26th March.

Sunderland maintain the right to recall the centre-back at 24 hours' notice should Roy Keane suffer an injury crisis at the Stadium of Light.
