A trio of American wildcards are through to the second round of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells after Vania King, Melanie Oudin and Ahsha Rolle all recorded victories.
King was forced to fight all the way for her place in the next stage, with the 19-year-old needing two and a half hours to see off Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 4-6 6-3 6-4.
The Californian showed her battling skills by coming back from 3-0 down in the final set.
Oudin, in her first appearance at the Masters event in Indian Wells, was a comfortable 7-5 6-2 victor over Maret Ani, while Rolle recorded a 6-2 6-2 win to brush past fellow American Madison Brengle.
Rolle's reward for the win is a second-round tie against world No.4 Jelena Jankovic.
Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru will tackle top seed - and beaten Australian Open finalist - Ana Ivanovic after she defeated Meng Yuan of China 6-4 6-4.
Argentinean Gisela Dulko staged the fightback of the day as she bounced back from losing her first set against Julie Ditty 6-0 to win the next two 6-3 6-3.
