St Helens have suffered another big blow on the injury front with news of Paul Wellens' quad strain.

The full-back has captained the side in the absence of Keiron Cunningham, Paul Sculthorpe and Sean Long, but has paid the price for his over exertion.

Wellens is expected to be sidelined for three weeks, although coach Daniel Anderson is expected to have hooker Cunningham back for Sunday's Challenge Cup fourth round tie against London Skolars.

Matt Gidley, who switched from centre when Wellens missed his last match against Salford last August, will again deputise at full-back.

"Keiron has been chomping at the bit for a few weeks now," said Anderson.

"It gives us a good opportunity to rest James Roby, especially with a five-day turnaround."

Anderson is likely to give a debut to 18-year-old stand-off Gary Wheeler from the bench meanwhile ahead of the derby with Wigan Warriors at the Millennium Stadium on May 4.
