Steel vote is rusty

Brough: Man of Steel?

Obviously the people in the media that select it will be swayed perhaps by those teams who are in the play-offs.

Phil Clarke and Stevo believe that it is time the format for the Man of Steel award is changed.

Speaking on Boots 'N' All, the duo believe that the voting system, that happens at the end of the season may overlook players who performed well at the start of the campaign.

"It is difficult to select one player," said Clarke.

"The voting is done at the end of the season and no one can remember who played well at in April or May! It is impossible.

"My opinion is that the player's player should become the Man of Steel. The highest accolade should go to the player who the other players vote for."

Started in 1997, the Man of Steel award is voted on by members of the Rugby Football League press, but Stevo believes it is time that is changed.

"We should change the way we select it," explained Stevo. "I know it's been done this way for years, but it should be changed.

"We should have a panel of former great players who go to each individual game and they make their decision.

"We should have it all rolling through each week so we know who is in contention.

"I agree with Phil that when it comes to the end of the season you can't remember who played well.

"Obviously the people in the media that select it will be swayed perhaps by those teams who are in the play-offs. I don't think that is fair to the lower teams who have a player, say like Danny Brough, who has to be in contention as well."
