Tranmere have sacked manager John Barnes and his assistant Jason McAteer.

As exclusively revealed by skysports.com earlier on Friday, Barnes has paid the price following Rovers' disastrous start to the season.

The duo took charge at Prenton Park in the summer, but two league wins from 11 matches have left Rovers languishing 22nd in League One.

Physio Les Parry has been placed in temporary charge and he will be assisted by reserve team boss Shaun Garnett, with Tranmere not playing until Monday night against Stockport, live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1.

Candidate

Chairman Peter Johnson has already begun the search for a new manager and has called on the fans to unite behind the team.

He said: "Unfortunately results have not gone our way this season and we are at the wrong end of the table.

"We must now focus on finding the best possible candidate to help us climb the division.

"I urge all supporters to get behind Les, Shaun and the team on Monday night when we play at home to Stockport County."

Good decision by the board, should never have been hired in the first place, i remember celtic losing to inverness at home in the cup and making them the laughing stock of the SPL. he had the money at celtic and couldn't manage so what chance without any money at tranmere, where they aren't in a 2 team league! I think he is in the mould of Tony Adams, useless at both wycombe and pompey, obviously not cut out for management. I wish tranmere the best of luck in their fight against the drop!

Its about time too!...The appointment of john barnes was a joke from the start, and then Mc Ateer.....even more laughable! Mind you they won me a few pounds....i kept backing them to lose.....and that wasn't hard with them two in charge ha ha.

David Brennan and Darren Davis are 2 supporters who have been spoilt with the riches their club has given them. What if a nugget like Barnes was given the job at your clubs? Would you be happy with 7 points from 33? Didn`t think so! So get down from your high horses. John Barnes has not lasted more than 7 months in any of the jobs he's had and should never have got this job. MrJohnson, please do not rush into appointing some no mark. Steve Coppell, Paul Jewell, Peter Reid are all realistic targets. Lets get this club moving forward again. Today is a good day......

Ryan James (Liverpool fan) says...

John Barnes was one of my favourite Liverpool players ever but as with many great players, it does'nt give them a divine right to be a great coach/manager. Johns record at Celtic, Jamacia, and now Tranmere isn't good. Its one thing knowing the game as clearly John Barnes and Jason Mcaterer do but translating it into coaching and getting the best out of players is a different challenge. It would of been nice to see them succeed but clearly things have gone from bad to worse and its time for them both to move on.

Geraint Williams (Everton fan) says...

Peter Johnson is dry rot. Ronnie Moore was making slow progress but it was progress. Barnes is a poor man manager and is unable to imbue players to perform now or never. His ego always gets entangled with the chip on his shoulder. Met him a couple of times and he has a flawed personality. Jason McAteer is too nice a man to be a manager, he hasn't got the 'killer instinct' dealing with staff. A no nonsense man needs to be at the helm with ambition as well as hunger. Bringing Ronnie Moore back shouldn't be an option as stepping back in life never pays. Johnson is a liability as he actually believes his own lies and would sell his own mother if he could. The foundation of any club is the fans, Tranmere deserve better than Johnson at the helm

Keith Morrey (Tranmere Rovers fan) says...

Lets hope this is a lesson learnt to our chairman Mr Johnson after the way he treated Ronnie Moore. Barnes should never have got the job in the first place. Let's see someone like Steve Coppel or Peter Reid incharge and get us back up to where we should be.

Frank Claughton village says...

Poor judgement in selection of managerial personel and like most Rovers Fans what happened really to Ronnie Moore? You won`t get better than him at their level of football. A new buyer might solve many issues.

Kavi Pabari (Arsenal fan) says...

They talk of managers not being given enough time but how much time can you actually give them what if Tranmere kept John Barnes till the end of the season and they get relegated to league two, it would be a total disgrace. This was the best time to sack him though he should have never been there in the first place, time now to find someone who can help the club beat the drop !

Gab Emordi (Liverpool fan) says...

The players certainly did not seem to be putting it all in for the manager and it is hard to see why, because he seems a decent bloke, not a bully like Roy Keane. I saw the goals they conceded against Bury and, after being one up, the keeper does something totally ridiculous, comes way off his line for no reason, concedes the equaliser and then the nerves set in and Bury get the inevitable equaliser. You have to wonder if some of the players just did not want to do it for their new manager.

Mark Williams (Liverpool fan) says...

This relates to the question regarding the lack of top English managers. I am not saying that John Barnes could or would have been a top manager but if the young inexperienced managers are not given a chance then how do they gain the experience, knowledge and connections?? 11 matches at that level is no time for anyone to be able to build a team and integrate a playing style, especially when they loose half of the 1st team from the previous year. I think it is shocking that club boards are so incompetent when hiring and firing managers and only leads to long term instability at thier club.......

Thank god the pair of clowns have gone! Some strange comments from people on here about a club they know nothing about - Yes you Rangers fan! we were 2 mins off the playoffs last year then this idiot turns up and works his magic then lo and behold worst team in the division lets just hope it's not too late to salvage the season TRFC

Is the Chairman an idiot?!? He has put the Physio in charge of the 1st Team and has put the Reserve Team Boss as his assistant! Why not put the Reserve Team Boss as in temporary charge?!? No wonder they are in trouble!

Steve Wainman (Preston North End fan) says...

A lot of people have a lot of respect for john barnes, both as a person and as a player, But as a manager he has had a number of failures. If the public know this, surely whoever at Tranmere Rovers appointed him should have known he was not upto the mark required. Should they not be sacked as well. It must be costing hard up teams money in compensation by bad appointments

it was only a matter of time before he was found out. He just didnt have what is needed

Keith Morrey (Tranmere Rovers fan) says...

As from the moment Barnes and McAteer joined the club, i thought it was the wrong choice. I do think you should give a new manager time but after seven points from a possible 33 it was invitable that they (Barnes/ McAteer) had to go. Now can the chairman and board please not jump in to replace them with anyone. Please please please for the sake of our great band of supporters get someone with a good footballing pedigree like Steve Coppel, or Peter Reid. As ithink these two would be able to work wonders with our team, even though we don't have the money to plough into the team. Sorry to say this is a good day for the Super White Army

Austin Washington (Tranmere Rovers fan) says...

It was a disgrace that ronnie moore was sacked, this has come 11 games to late, he should never have been hired in the first place, not managed a club in 10 years and it showed! only problem is who do we get in to replace him??

Posted 11:58 9th October 2009

David Brennan (Rangers fan) says...

If the Club doesn't buy the players there's little the Manager can do. After all you can't make silk purses out of sow's ears! But on the other hand if there is a bit of player power versus the Manager then I don't think anybody should go and watch Tranmere. This sort of thing happens often and a new Manager comes in and lo and behold here's a rubbish team climbing the Division.
