Dundee United defender Paul Dixon has signed a new two-year deal at Tannadice.

Dixon's previous deal was due to expire next year, but United have moved to keep him on Tayside until 2012.

The 23-year-old former Dundee player was brought to the club by former boss Craig Levein in June 2008.

And his recent performances for United earned him his first call-up to the Scotland squad for the friendly win over Czech Republic at Hampden.

United boss Peter Houston was delighted to secure the future of Dixon and believes the full-back has a big future ahead of him.

"Paul is one of a number of players whose contracts expire in 2011 and who we wish to remain at Tannadice," Houston told the club's official website.

"I am convinced that Paul has a big future in the game and I'm delighted that, for the next two years at least, that future will be at Dundee United."

Dixon was happy to pledge his long-term future to the club.

"I'm delighted to commit to a further year at Dundee United," said Dixon.

"I wish to thank those who have assisted my development at the club and that includes the fans.

"I look forward to what I'm confident will be a successful period for the club."
