Dutch champions Ajax failed to win yet again as they conceded a late equaliser to FC Twente to settle for a 1-1 draw, while rivals PSV Eindhoven destroyed Roda JC 7-1 at home.

Frank de Boer's Ajax headed into Saturday evening's encounter against FC Twente at the Amsterdam ArenA on the back of two competitive draws in a row, but started off with a bang when Miralem Sulejmani gave them the lead after just 10 minutes.

However, Ajax failed to retain that advantage going into the final minutes, as Luuk de Jong found the target in the 87th minute.

The result means that Twente are now in pole position in the table with 16 points from seven matches with AZ Alkmaar second - a point behind but with a game in hand. Ajax too have 15 points.

It also means that PSV have crept closer to the top of the table following their 7-1 demolition of Roda JC at the Philips Stadion.

Ola Toivonen broke the deadlock for the Eindhoven giants in the 15th minute and after Jagos Vukovic was sent off four minutes later for the visitors, Dries Mertens scored a brace.

Kevin Strootman's goal on 34 minutes saw PSV go into the half-time break 4-0 up, and although Sanharib Malki pulled one back for Roda 10 minutes into the restart, Mertens completed his hat-trick moments later and Tim Matavz made it 6-1 to the hosts before long.

Mertens netted his fourth goal of the match on 89 minutes when he slotted home from the penalty spot to round up a comprehensive 7-1 victory.

Heerenveen and Heracles played out a 1-1 draw at Abe Lenstra Stadion, as Oussama Assaidi's 29th minute goal for the hosts was cancelled out by Samuel Armenteros deep in the second half.

FC Utrecht had a disappointing day at the office as they went down 1-0 to NAC Breda away from home.

The visitors saw Michael Zullo given his marching orders just before the interval and conceded the only goal of the match in the final moments of the game to Kees Luijckx.

Elsewhere in the Dutch top flight, ADO Den Haag registered a comfortable victory over struggling VVV Venlo in front of their own supporters, thanks to first-half goals from John Verhoek and Gabor Horvath.
