Jonas Olsson claimed West Brom deserved to be awarded their penalty following a controversial incident in his side's 2-1 victory at Aston Villa.

The Swede was at the centre of many of the major incidents for the Baggies and none more so than when Villa's Chris Herd was given a red card for what seemed to be an innocuous challenge on the defender.

Chris Brunt missed the spot-kick but the visitors still walked away from Villa Park with all three points after Olsson cancelled out Darren Bent's opener and Paul Scharner's second half volley earned West Brom their first away league win over Villa for 32 years.

And Olsson told Sky Sports: "I think we got tangled up a little bit and I fall down and the Villa player (Herd) kicked back and hit me.

"I think maybe he feels it was a bit harsh, but I think he will agree it was a foul and you know, credit to the linesman. He sees the incident and acts on it and I think like I've been saying in other interviews, last week, I think I should have had a penalty against Wolves and I didn't get it but today I did and these things I think even out throughout the season.

"And like I also said in my last interview, that I think that after the Wolves game, I think the refs are keeping a consistent level and I think that's all you can ask and I think everyone is on board with that."

Asked how he would feel if it was given as a penalty against him, he added: "I've been on the other side many times before. Obviously when there's an incident like this, you can't look at it objectively on the field of course.

"I was on the field when they had their penalty. I was speaking to the ref and I wasn't happy with that decision but when I looked at the pictures after the game, I must admit, it was a penalty, so I think you have to be careful about your first reaction and maybe ask the Villa player what he thinks about it in a couple of days' time."
