Steve McClaren

McClaren: Who should succeed him?

Steve McClaren has been sacked as England coach and the FA have begun their search for a replacement.

A number of names are already being discussed by the media but who do you think should take over English football's top job?

Should the FA look to a home-grown candidate such as Harry Redknapp or Sam Allardyce?

Would you prefer an overseas coach with international experience such as Guus Hiddink or Felipe Scolari?

What about Jose Mourinho? Is he the man to restore the pride to the national team?

Or how about an untried candidate with a fine playing record such as Alan Shearer?

I don't know about everyone else I'm fed up of all the speculation already. Mourhinio says yes then no then maybe, its driving me mad. Just as long as we don't get an FA puppet I don't care, as long as they have got the guts to stand up to the big heads and overpaid primma donnas. People like Rio Ferdinand reckon thing they are the greatest thing in football, wake up and smell the coffee son your not, Stevie G is another great club footballer but International no chance. Sol Campbell past it, Ashley Cole sub standard and the list goes on. If the players performed with the same passion as the thousands of fans who follow the national team around the World we would have something to watch on TV in the summer. Finnally got an idea for a new Reality TV show called The Manager, put all the prospectives in a house and the public votes them out day by day whoever is left at the end is the loser and gets the England job.

Do you really think that Mourinho is stupid to say "Why not?". He knows what to do. There is not a question we like him or not. The question is that : Is there anyone as succesful as Mourinho for such a short time in football game? I think no one. Let him carry on being so succesful with England as well. He won us over, we miss him. God will say: " I gave you the MAN".

Alan Curbishley How can Sir Trvor Brooking favour a no gooder like Alan Curbishley, especially after his overwheming success's with Charlton ( who are they ), and now West Ham. Basically Curbishley is in the same mould as the now departed Steve MacClaren, and we all know how that ended. What we, the fans are clamouring for is a manager with proven exprience and success, and Curbishley is certainly not in that mould. If he cant handle the likes of Zamora, and Anton Ferdinand, how in hells name would he handle the temperment of the so called world class superstars at his disposal. All he would become is Brookings YES Man.Lets Face it, THERE IS NOT AN ENGLISH BORN MANAGER GOOD ENOUGH TO MANAGE THE ENGLAND TEAM. The only managers good enough, working or have worked in England/Scotland during the last 4 years, and had any international success's at club level, are : Scottish, Irish, Spanish and Portugeses respectively. The FA naffed up with MacClaren, Now bring on Mourino. The FA can't afford the same mistake twice.

Really we should remove all players from the England squad and start again. If we have Jose in charge, he will only choose Terry, Lampard and Cole. All 3 are crap. John Terry should not be captain of England after the disgrace that he has put upon the country by getting drunk and releaving him self all over the floor. How can you send them to any country when they act like that. Do we want to be shown up any more than what we are already. Choose somebody who will put his heart and sole into his job and be proud to play and also manage the England Squad. WE DID USE TO BE GREAT AT ONE TIME, BUT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE WE LOST THE GREAT, OUT OF GREAT BRITIAN. GIVE THE JOB TO ALAN SHREARER

definitely talk to alan shearer, he is the right man without a shadow of doubt. you only need experience in back room, harry, bobby charlton, bobby robson. he is a winner, intelligent, confident and strong. i believe he will get tough like fergie when the going gets tough. we do not want jose. get an englishman, get someone with youth and develop and wwill win the world cup and euro 2010!!!! we need someone who will handle themselves with class and talk behind closed doors as professionals do!! very big mistake to go with mourinho, scolari, wenger, martin oneil. the only candidate is shearer. he can lead and be helped make the youth and senior sides have pride and real belief.

I can't believe that everybody wants Jose Mourinho to be the England manager. When he was at Chelsea the only people that liked him were Chelsea fans, everybody else hated him because he's so cocky and arrogant!! I'm not denying that he is a great manager but I personally can't stand the guy and I wouldn't want to watch an England game with him in charge! Mourinho only did so well at Chelsea because he had money to spend, and he managed to waste most of that, which obviously you can't do at international level. Even though he had this money to spend Chelsea still never managed to play good football, they were always just grinding out the results. Nobody wants to see England grinding out results, we want to see them playing great football! Brian Barwick is a joke by saying that nationality isn't an issue, we should stick with an English manager who will be passionate about it. England need a manager who won't be scared to drop the big players like lampard and gerrard, which we need to do in order to get our best team. Mclaren just tried to play our best individual eleven players, whereas we need to pick eleven players that play best as a whole team. Therefore I think the only man for the job is Harry Redknapp!

I personally support Jose Mourinho taking on the job as England's new manager going by his track record. He is one indiviual with great focus who always deliver when it matters most which is what England needs. Talking about individual talent, yes England has got it but it now comes down to the managerial level. England Managers tend to put sentiments in choosing players for the National team. They all believe in some certain crop of players to perform miracles while there are so many other young talented player out there waiting for a chance to give their 200%. But with the likes of Jose Mourinho, who is unbaised i know and believe he could take England's National team to the top where its ougth to be. Its time to put sentiments apart and face reality.

I personally think Jose Mourinho will be the man to take England to a very high level. Because of his desire to win and influential attitude, he will be highly successful. Looking back at his records and achievings, the other candidate listed has not got that far.If England whants to get it right this time, they need Mourinho, no one else. Lets accept it.

I would love to see Stuart Pearce offered the position of England manager with Ian Wright as his deputy. I believe these two could take English international football, shake it by the scruff of its neck, and restore the pride and dedication required when representing your counrty. Restore David Beckham back to Captain as well and you'll have three proven English lions in charge. The above may seem strange but I think England, as a team, have been wandering aimlessly without any direction or guidance on or off the pitch. This has been so since MacClaren took over! I feel that my three nominations above, as proposterous as they may seem, would without question give 100% to restoring and organising the national side ready for the World Cup qualifiers and hopefully further too!

Darren Sparling (Manchester United fan) says...

The England players should take a good long look in the mirror and try to find where the pride in their nation has gone.It is totally wrong to blame Steve Mc Claren fully, the so called great players like Gerrard and Lampard can play brilliant football for their clubs but cannot do it for the national team. There needs to be a surge of new blood flowing through football in England. Mc Claren was very unlucky to be sacked as his side were injury prone throughout the campaign. Alot of the current squad should not be there if England reach the next World Cup.The best man for the job has to be Harry Rednapp as he has brought Portsmouth to new height's in the league and is the best candidate for the job.Look what he has done for Campbell,James and Johnson. He will have the talent in place to work with with yoiung players such as Bentley,Young,Walcott,Richards and plenty more coming through. Harry Rednapp is just the man to get English football to the top.

Its got to be Klinsmann. Living in Germany I saw at first hand what he did to THe German team before the 2006 World Cup. His appointment was scoffed ast by all including Beckenbauer. He ignored all the criticism and with the weakest German squad for years got to the final ! No one outside Germany had heard of most of his players. He brought in top physical training coaches from the USA and all his players were top fit, fitter than they had ever been.Top formers such as Kuryani who did not work at this were left out and the chosen all pulled in one direction. His influence was enormous and yet outwardly he stayed quite and modest throughout. An Italian coach used to training Italians and Spaniards will not succeed. Klinsi would kill or cure our under-performers. He has never managed a club so he could certainly live with the idea of only getting limited time with the squad. Bring him on !

As a Pompey fan I would hate to see Harry go at this point in time. He does seem to get the best out of poeple and is not affraid of dropping the odd square peg when the team will benifit. Question for all of you. Why does the England manager have to be full time? We play about ten games a year. Managing a first class side and doing the deals meens he has to keep in touch with all the good players form etc. It will be a waste for Harry not to be in club football. If an England managerit is expected to act as a figure head at social events we could use Alan Shearer or kate Moss! If it is to sit on FA committees use John Motson. We need a team manager but not full time. I would be happy with Harry,Sam or Martin on that basis.

Colin Branthwaite says...

I agree with Mr. Skinner, the debate is pointless. The FA don't really care about the fans interest and looking at their track record they are probably considering Tony Blair! Like Len Shackleton once famously wrote about club directors, the average FA Board members knowledge of football is........... We should go back to the old days and have a committee who decides what to do and then blame isn't down to one person. That will never happen of course but with the lack of a decent English manager I would consider Klinsmann with someone like David Moyes in support. As a Sunderland fan I would go for Sam Allardyce for obvious reasons but again that will never happen. Good luck to whoever gets the chalice!

I can't believe that anyone in England could give any support to having Shearer as manager of England. Here is someone who is so patriotic that for years, he refused to play for England and we as a nation suffered because of that snub. He showed that his main attribute is petulance - I even object to seeing him comment on TV on England games.

I don't care who the next England manager is, thanks to the over paid England players, the shambolic FA, and the ridiculous Steve Mclaren I now feel total apathy with regards the national team....i no longer care, i used to be one of the biggest supporters of the national side, but what's the point...nothing changes. Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard all talked a good game in press conferences but couldn't produce anything in an England shirt so stuff them all, and if Beckham wants to win his 100th cap, well he should have thought about that before he went chasing the money and fame in a pathetic semi-pro league!

Well Maclaren was rubbish! Mourinho is the best for England but I don't whether he is will want the job! If not him Shearer and Rednapp senior! Come on England we will beat Croatia!!!

So once again we are the laughing stock in the footballing world. A pathetic performance from the lads once again and of course the sacking of a sub-par manager. This seems to be the status quo for the FA to accept. What is needed is a total revamp of the entire system whereby young lads get into a national training academy. Then the clubs should be forced to have 80% of their players from ENGLAND and not foreigners. Now once that is done a manager with passion and a talent of pulling off the impossible against all odds. Someone that can take the ropes and get everything from the players. That individual is Harry Rednapp!!! I hope is first duty would be get rid of Beckham, Lampard, Neveille and put Rooney on the bench until he figures out how to play. This will give the young lads a shot that are not tainted with their modeling contracts, sponsorships and 200,000.00 pounds a week.

I considered the choice of McLaren wrong at the time - England needs someone with a lot more experience so why consider Shearer? Naturally, I would love to see Mourinho in charge, he has the ability which he proved when he motivated Chelsea. My alternative would be Martin O'Neil who has already turned down the opportunity.

There has been a lot of men mentioned for the England job this week even Sven! People must have short memorys, do people not remember the boredom or the sheer lack of passion involved in most England performances? And a certain Mr mourhino has also been heavely backed despite the fact he was sacked from chelsea because the fans had stoped going to watch the boring brand of football his team played. If your looking for man who can deal with the press a man with the top notch man management skills to deal with the massive egos of the players a man who has the respect of the public, press and players then there is only one man and the added bonus is he s English! that man is Harry Redknapp the peoples favourite! So come on the F.A. dont employ another yes man in your imagine have the balls to do the right thing! REDKNAPP FOR ENGLAND!!!!!!

Darren Hickey says...

The England players ought to have a good look at themselves as they probably had the easiest group and couldnt even manage to qualify and Scotland had the world champs Italy and runner-ups France and were very unlucky not to qualify.I read stories seeing them in a nightclub disgracing themselves before the Croatia match. What kind of preperation is that ?They need a manager to put all the big egos in place. The most popular choices are Mourinho and Capello but lets face facts they both had two great clubs and Mourinho had Abramivoch millions and Capello had a world class team packed with stars and last season Chelsea lost the Premiership and Real Madrid scraped the title as Barca crumpled. But they are both world-class managers. But do they want to manage an international club for only 10 games a year. They both have no experience at international level and between them have only worked with Beckham Terry Lampard and the Coles. They would not want 10 games a year they would want 50.The best choice would be Harry Redknapp as he has done wonders at Portsmouth and saved them from relegation in the last five games one season and they are european contenders and if thats not good enough for England I dont know what is.He has also worked with several English players and wont let them get out of line.He would be a big miss for Pompy though.
