Chelsea have been hit with a Football Association charge of failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion against Queens Park Rangers, while the Football Association has also asked Andre Villas-Boas to explain his comments about the match officials.

The Blues were reduced to nine men as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road on Sunday to leave them third in the Premier League and six points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Jose Bosingwa was the first player to be red carded after bringing down Shaun Wright-Phillips in the 33rd minute, and the reaction of his team-mates has been deemed unacceptable by the FA.

A number of Chelsea players surrounded referee Chris Foy immediately following Bosingwa's dismissal and the club have now been charged with failing to keep them in check.

Critical

The FA has also confirmed that Villas-Boas must provide an explanation of his post-match media comments, which were critical of Foy and the assistant referees.

Villas-Boas did not feel Foy had handled the game well after Chelsea were unable to recover from the sending-offs of Bosingwa and Didier Drogba.

"It's the third time in a row where a referee has directly influenced the result for us and we're not happy with this. In three games there have been blatant refereeing mistakes," he said after the match.

"I'm very disappointed with Chris' performance. With nine players we kept our emotions very well.

"Chris and his team managed to play an emotional game and they conceded to the crowd and committed tremendous mistakes."

Chelsea have until Friday to respond to both counts.
