Bookies tip Birmingham and QPR to lead the title race

Championship Preview QPR Reading Birmingham

Championship: Thrills expected

In recent years the Championship has earned a reputation as the most competitive division in English football, and rightly so.

Void of the financial gulfs which dictate the realistic aspirations of teams in the Premier League before a ball has even been kicked, the second tier operates at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Virtually anyone can beat anyone, helping to provide an entertaining platform on which the majority of the division can harbour hopes of mounting a promotion bid, while being equally wary of getting dragged into the relegation dogfight at the bottom.

This year promises to once again throw up the usual dosage of thrills and spills which help to make the Championship so unpredictable, yet so entertaining, with a whole host of sides dreaming of booking their place among England's elite come May.

As is always the case at this level there will be an intriguing mix of fallen giants and ambitious upstarts ready to do battle come the big kick-off on Saturday.

The three sides who slipped through the Premier League trapdoor last season - Reading, Birmingham and Derby - will all be hoping to bounce back at the first time of asking, while those that have risen from League One - Swansea, Nottingham Forest and Doncaster - are not there to make up the numbers.

Alex McLeish's Birmingham begin the campaign as title favourites, with summer signing Kevin Phillips - fresh from firing West Brom to the promised land last term - expected to use his considerable goal threat to good use.

Busy

Of the other two unfortunates who find themselves back in the second tier it is Derby who have had the busier summer, overhauling a squad which failed so dramatically when given the opportunity to perform on the biggest stage.

Reading, meanwhile, have quietly got on with business, accepting that departures were inevitable, they have retained a squad with enough quality and Championship know-how to ensure that they should be among the front-runners.

In a break from the norm, a side which flirted with relegation for a large chunk of last season - Queens Park Rangers - are widely tipped to experience life at the opposite end of the table this time around.

Bankrolled by Formula One magnates Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore, the Rs will be hoping their owners' deep pockets bring the good times back to Loftus Road.

The past and present in Neil Warnock's colourful career should also have plenty to celebrate in 2009/09.

Crystal Palace - the present - came up short in the play-offs last term and will be eyeing the top six once again, while Sheffield United - the past - showed towards the end of last season that they will be no pushovers.

With the pretenders to the crown out of the way, trying to predict how the rest may perform would have the combined powers of Mystic Meg and Nostradamus scratching their head in bemusement.

Wolves, but for a one-season fling in the top flight back in 2003/04, continue to embody the nearly-men mantle, while Ipswich also have plenty of prior experience regarding near misses.

Struggled

Watford and Charlton have enjoyed recent dalliances with the likes of Manchester United and co. but struggled to get to grips with life back in the real world last season and must improve dramatically if they are to avoid becoming second tier fixtures.

Cardiff's FA Cup final appearance could be just what was needed to inspire them to greater glories, while Burnley and Plymouth will have aspirations of being in the top six shake-up.

Bristol City exceeded all expectations in 2007/08 and may find it difficult to replicate those heroics this time around, but their success should give hope to Forest, Swansea and Doncaster who will all be hoping that the momentum of promotion fires them towards the summit.

Norwich have enjoyed a busy summer in the transfer market, but need their new recruits to gel quickly if they are to avoid a repeat of last season's woeful start.

Southampton only survived on the final day last term and have done little over the summer to suggest a reversal in fortunes is around the corner.

Coventry, Preston and Sheffield Wednesday all flirted with disaster during the last campaign and could find themselves firmly embroiled in a basement battle once again.

And Blackpool and Barnsley supporters should brace themselves for a campaign which may bring more disappointment than delirium.

In: Barry Nicholson (Aberdeen, free), Ross Wallace (Sunderland, loan)

Out: None

In: Noel Hunt (Dundee United, undisclosed)

Out: Adam Bygrave (Weymouth, free), Ben Hamer (Brentford, loan), Glenn Little (Portsmouth, free), Dave Kitson (Stoke, £5.5m), Scott Davies (Aldershot, loan)

Out: Chris Lucketti (Huddersfield, free), Rob Hulse (Derby, £1.75m), Ben Starosta (Aldershot, loan), Luton Shelton (Valerenga, £1m)

Key man: James Beattie

Chances: The Blades staged a late resurgence last season to get within sniffing distance of the play-offs, but are widely tipped to be among the front-runners this time around.

Sheffield Wednesday

Manager: Brian Laws

Position last season: 16th

In: James O'Connor (Burnley, free)

Out: Burton O'Brien (Falkirk, free)

Key man: James O'Connor

Chances: The Owls need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to avoid another relegation dogfight, and they may struggle to find that cutting edge.

Southampton

Manager: Jan Poortvliet

Position last season: 20th

In: Chris Perry (Luton, free), Lee Holmes (Derby, free), Paul Wotton (Plymouth, free), Tommy Forecast (Tottenham, undisclosed), Morgan Schneiderlin (Strasbourg, £1.2m)

Out: Cedric Baseya (Lille, free)

Key man: Stern John

Chances: The Saints came dangerously close to the drop last season, and installing a foreign manager with no track record in England may prove to be a mistake.

Swansea

Manager: Roberto Martinez

Position last season: 1st (League One)

In: Ashley Williams (Stockport, £400k), Mark Gower (Southend, free), Federico Bessone (Espanyol, free), Albert Serran (Espanyol, £80k), Fabien Brandy (Manchester United, loan), Stefan Morrision (West Brom, free)

Out: Kevin Austin (Chesterfield, free), Kevin Amankwaah (Swindon, free), Darryl Duffy (Bristol Rovers, free), Darren Way (Yeovil, undisclosed)

Key man: Jason Scotland

Chances: The Swans should be able to slot seamlessly into life into the second tier, and could be an outside bet for a play-off spot.

Watford

Manager: Aidy Boothroyd

Position last season: 6th

In: Jon Harley (Burnley, free)

Out: Nathan Ellington (Derby, loan), Jordan Stewart (Derby, free), Toumani Diagoura (Hereford, free), Steve Kabba (Blackpool, loan), Darius Henderson (Sheffield United, £2m), Moses Ashikodi (Hereford, loan)

Key man: Tommy Smith

Chances: The Hornets hit the self-destruct button last season and Boothroyd must ensure that his troops do not lose faith heading into the new campaign.

Wolves

Manager: Mick McCarthy

Position last season: 7th

In: Sam Vokes (Bournemouth, undisclosed), Richard Stearman (Leicester, undisclosed), David Jones (Derby, £1m), Chris Iwelumo (Charlton, £400k)

Out: Freddy Eastwood (Coventry, £1.2m), Matt Bailey (Burton, loan), Seyi Olofinjana (Stoke City, £3m), Elliott Bennett (Bury, loan), Lee Collins (Port Vale, loan), Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff, £300k), Charles Mulgrew (Aberdeen, undisclosed)

Key man: Michael Kightly

Chances: McCarthy's men missed out on a top-six finish last season by virtue of goal difference, and could find themselves on the outside looking in once again come May.

Aiden Booth (Charlton Athletic fan) says...

I expect a very close season again this time round. Although many doubt it, I can see Charlton pushing for promotion come the end of the season, with the good mix of experience and passion we have in the side. I agree that we need to sign a couple more defenders before the end of the transfer window, but I'm sure that if we get a couple in, we'll have a relatively good season. Pardew has experience in getting teams out of this division, and we couldn't have any better in charge for the job in hand. My favourites for promotion would have to be QPR, Birmingham and Reading, with Palace, Wolves, Derby and hopefully us, hot on their tails. I also think that Swansea will have a very good season, and I think they have enough to avoid relegation. I'm really looking forward to our game with them tomorrow, and wouldn't be surprised with any result. Hopefully it will be a very enjoyable season, that has us on the edge of our seats once again, and I guess it will be. I just can't wait for it to begin now! Good luck all!

Lee Smith (Watford fan) says...

True, im worried boothroyd is out his depth, we are really going to struggle for goals next season hes got rid of all our strikers.. Danny Shittu 2million what a bad deal he could have got at least 4! We need two new top quality strikers to even have a chance of a half decent finish. Personally I think Birmingham will win it and sheffeild united to be up there as well - Hendo, Beatty upfront will take some stopping

James Ottley (Queens Park Rangers fan) says...

I don't know why everyone keeps saying QPR have spent loads of money. We have bought two players for a combined fee of £500,000 and the rest we have got on loan or for free. I don't think we will go up this season but we will be pushing. To be honest I would rather see us stay in the Championship and just go on a few good cup runs, the Championship is a much better league, where anyone can beat anyone and the players dont fall over like they've been shot if someone tries to tackle them!

Will Veale (Plymouth Argyle fan) says...

I agree with some of the comments above, its going to be an exciting season which will surely meet the expectations of every teams fans. It really will be a tense season with the potential teams for promotion almost being impossible to tell. QPR are definately in with a chance, more so than derby i believe. If i was putting money on top 3 would be, Reading, Birmingham, QPR. I think Bristol City fans are living in a dreamworld if they think that they will have a repeat of last season. I definately think they will hold their own and im positive they wont get relegated, but i can see them finishing mid table. I think Palace will make the play offs again, along with QPR, Wolves and Cardiff, although there will be teams around the playoffs all equally in for as good a chance, and id like to think that Plymouth will be one of those teams. Everyone always puts Plymouth as the underdog and apparently we are always going to finish near the bottom, but we tend to suprise so just wait and see. I'm off to the bookies for an accumulator for Saturday's championship games, If your unsure, put a draw, first game of the season could go either way but often you see a lot of draws. + you get good odds. Enjoy the season everyone!

Brian O'connor (Sheffield Wednesday fan) says...

Sheffield Wednesday 19? Im betting them to just take the last play-off place, Wolves for 1st place and Sheffield united for relegation!

Martin Ewol (Nottingham Forest fan) says...

Looking forward to a good season. I can see Swansea being the unsuprising package this season, they can really play some some good footy. As for our chances? Forest can hope for a mid table finish, the future looks good though as the club has installed great structure. Clubs in the football league need to install real local pride, to employ local people/players if poss! league of gent style!

Joe Atherton (Blackpool fan) says...

Cheers lads, keep tagging us as the underdogs, we love it. Nobody gave us a chance of staying up in League One when Simon Grayson took over and we did it. Nobody gave us a sniff of going up the following season, and Grayson lead us to Ten in a Row, culminating in play-off glory at Wembley. Everyone thought we'd go straught back down, guess what? You were all wrong. Best team in the Championship? No, not buy a long chalk. Team with most guts, heart and passion? Unquestionable. BRING IT ON! COME ON YOU POOL!!!

Pilgrim Pete (Plymouth Argyle fan) says...

As an avid greens fan i can only see a season of discomfort for us. We have sold the old rear guard and have brought in some new blood that even through the pre season havnt had time to play together. As for our fellow relegation battlers i find it hard to look beyond Barnsley, blackpool and the swans. I think Forrest will be well suited to the championship and may suprise one or two teams out there! Its hard to look beyond Brum and reading for the top spot. Come on you greens!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James Watson (Watford fan) says...

Watford 8th? Don't make me laugh. Unless we bring in some new faces before the new season we are going down.

Posted 00:26 8th August 2008

Matt Powell (Coventry City fan) says...

We have signed some quality players in the summer, Eastwood has a point to prove and will score lots of goals as will Clinton Morrison who got 17 last season. I believe we will be in the top half of the division at Christmas and may just push on for a place in the playoffs

Posted 23:57 7th August 2008

Rick Bolt (Bristol City fan) says...

Just watch Bristol City come roaring back for another great season. The boys will prove you all wrong, once again!!!!!

Posted 22:31 7th August 2008

Ross O'malley (Sheffield United fan) says...

I think that the prediction table will be relatively accurate, but not entirely. For starters, even though Reading have retained most of their players from last years relegated squad, I feel they will not adapt quickly enough to the championship and will finish play offs or just outside. I think Birmingham will more than likely win the league and it will be between palace, QPR, Wolves and the Blades for automatic promotion. I think a strong start for the Blades is vital and the fitness of Beattie and the performance of Henderson in his absence will ultimately decide Sheffield's final position.

Posted 21:48 7th August 2008

Alex Harris (Norwich City fan) says...

i reckon Reading and Birmingham will take the top 2 spots. As for play offs, i think we will be in for a surprise, i think Norwich will have a very good season and may sneak into the play offs, lets just wait and see, play off spots, Derby, Wolves,QPR and norwich, and going down Blackpool, Southampton and Plymouth, Its gonna be a good season

Posted 21:48 7th August 2008

Dicky Bluebird (Cardiff City fan) says...

A top six finish would be a fitting send off ofr Ninian Park before Cardiff move into the new all seater stadium but in all fairness, i can't see it happening. We will have trouble competing with the financial clout of teams such as Birmingham (i hope Bent does nothing!!) and Derby but a top 10 finish would be ok. The loss of Robbie FowlUp is the best thing that could of happen to the club as far as i'm concerned but it's a shame that the money from the sale of Aaron Ramsey couldn't of been put to more use. Lastly, i'd like to say that i wish the Jacks (Swansea) all the best, except for when they play us of course!! Bluebirds, Bluebirds!!!

Posted 21:38 7th August 2008

Andy Nash says...

I was as nervous as any Saints fan when i saw that Mr. Lowe was back in charge, alongside Mr. Wilde (who made big promises last time, but never delivered!). But since Jan Poortvliet took over, alongside Mark Wotte, things have taken an upward turn. The early part of pre-season looked good, but was against (with all due respect) low class opposition. However, the games against West Ham and Stoke, showed the first tender shoots of a recovery. We've got some potentially very good youngsters coming through and mixed with the older generation, i think we might surprise some people this season. I don't think we're looking at promotion or the play-offs, but I think we'll be comfortably mid table. Ijust hope that the two people running the club don't just see pound signs, when they look at our youngsters. I hope that we can keep the kids this time and keep financially secure by bringing the fans back to St Marys and by keeping the team together long enough to gain promotion next time round. DON'T SELL THE FAMILY JEWELLS!!!

Posted 20:57 7th August 2008

Pete Duncan (Sheffield United fan) says...

The blades have a great chance of going up this season - we have trimmed the fringe players and brought in some quality - especially in dave cotterill - we now have that missing link that we havnt had for a long time - an out and out winger who will get at defense's and create. with KB the manager he brings that fight that the blades fans are used to - he was the best signing of last season come on you red and white wizards!!

Posted 20:03 7th August 2008

Steve G (Norwich City fan) says...

I don't have much of an issue with the various predictions for Norwich this year. I think we will do well to be mid-table. But some others completely bewilder me - like Watford and Derby. Why is anyone tipping Derby for automatic promotion? They have a new team (with several players who have failed previously at this level) and were the worst Premier team in history. As for Watford, since Christmas last year I think they they have won 3 league games and have since sold their 3 best players! Relegation for Watford and very mid-table for Derby. Birmingham and Reading for automatic, QPR/Wolves/Cardiff/Forest for playoffs. I also see Palace, Ipswich, Sheff Utd, Coventry and Swansea having good seasons. Surprise strugglers? Charlton - defintely Pardew the first managerial casualty. Relegation for Watford, Barnsley & Doncaster with Southampton, Charlton and Plymouth coming very close.

Posted 20:01 7th August 2008

Chris Furse (Plymouth Argyle fan) says...

I fear that Plymouth will struggle as we lack creativity. If McFadden stays fit Birmingham will be head and shoulders above the rest, Reading will be organised and hard to beat and Sheff Utd should be up there. I'm not convinced about QPR as the off field instability relating to the relationship between Briatore and Dowie is bound to affect the players. Derby will be mid table as thry have made to many changes in the close season. Forest and Swansea could surprise people, particularly Forest as they will score a hatful of goals. Southampton and Blackpool will go down and i also think watford will struggle as they have lost a couple of players and their form between December and April last season was very poor.

Posted 19:21 7th August 2008

Ryan Fleming (Crystal Palace fan) says...

Personally, i think that this season in the championship will be one of the hardest ever! The 3 that came down Reading, Derby and the brummies will all be there or there abouts. The push for the playoffs this year will be unbearable! (Something like squeeky bum time for the most of the season!) Obvoiusly with the addition of Nick Carle to the Eagles this year, will definatly mean Palace will be pushing all season (Carle for Championship player of the year 08/09). Also the likes of Moses, Scannell, Derry, Soares, Fonte, Hill and argueably the best GK in the league Julian Speroni (As was shown last season with the least GA) Warnock has done wonders this year in the transfer market. There's always the likes of Charlton, Cardiff, Wolves, Sheffield United, QPR (With all the money they have now! But i just don't think Dowie's has got what it takes to take them all the way), Ipswich, Coventry (Coleman's spent well this year a good few additions), Watford (I'm unsure on? If they carry on with perfomance's like last year i'll tip them for a battle at the bottom but you can never be sure with the Hornets), Overall good season this year roll on Saturday 9th 08 thats when the real passion starts! Palace to win 3-1 opening day game against watford. Carle 1, Moses 2. Come on you Eagles!

Posted 18:38 7th August 2008

Lee Morgan (Nottingham Forest fan) says...

QPR could be in for an abrupt slap in the face! Spending all that cash doesnt guarantee promotion and Dowie hasnt exactly got the best record. I can see Birmingham winning the league with Crystal Palace & Sheff Utd as dark horses. As long as Forest finish above the sheep lovers, it will be a successful season. Good Luck to Derby on keeping Commins fit for the season. Never seen such a injury prone player seince Anderton!
