Sunderland have confirmed that Asamoah Gyan is joining UAE side Al-Ain on loan for the rest of the season.

Skysports.com revealed a deal was in place to take the Ghana superstar to the Middle East.

And now both clubs have confirmed that the move is going ahead, and Gyan has already signed his deal after flying to Asia on Friday evening.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce said: "Anyone who has seen Asamoah play will know that he hasn't been himself in recent months.

"This option suits all parties at the present time and the club is well protected in the deal.

"Asamoah has three years remaining on his contract and of course my wish would be that he finds his spark again and we see him in red and white stripes next season in the form that first attracted us to him."

Gyan only moved to Wearside last summer from Rennes and was a big hit in his first season with 11 goals, becoming a firm fans' favourite.

Sunderland have since signed strikers Connor Wickham, Ji Dong-won and Nicklas Bendtner but, despite this, Gyan's departure will shock many of the Black Cats faithful.

Al-Ain confirmed that Gyan would begin training with them on Sunday, after completing the formalities of the move and he will wear the number three shirt.
