Skysports.com understands Southampton have made a bid to sign defender Liam Fontaine from Championship rivals Bristol City.
Fontaine has been an integral part of the Robins' squad over the past five-and-a-half years and has made over 210 appearances since joining from Fulham, initially on loan.
However, he could now be offered the opportunity of a fresh challenge after in-form Southampton showed an interest in the 25-year-old.
Saints have made a 100 per cent start to the season since winning promotion from League One and manager Nigel Adkins is looking at ways to maintain the momentum.
Fontaine has not featured for City since the opening day of the season and has been sidelined due to an ankle injury.
