Darren Ferguson has emerged as a candidate for the vacant manager's job at Nottingham Forest, skysports.com understands.

Forest are on the lookout for a new boss after Steve McClaren resigned as manager on Sunday following the 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham.

Peterborough boss Ferguson is now thought to be on Forest's shortlist to succeed McClaren at the City Ground.

Ferguson is currently in his second spell in charge at Peterborough after returning to London Road last January.

The 39-year-old, who led Peterborough to promotion to the Championship in his first spell in charge of the club, repeated the feat last season by beating Huddersfield in the League One play-off final.

Peterborough currently sit in 13th spot in the table and Ferguson has helped the side develop an attractive, attacking style of play at London Road.

Ferguson is believed to have admirers within the Forest boardroom as they consider their options in bringing in a new man to transform the club's fortunes.

Peterborough would be reluctant to lose Ferguson, but they could face a fight to keep him if Forest make a move for his services.
