Toulouse missed out on the chance to go top of Ligue 1 after losing at Sochaux, while Nancy continue to await a first win of the season.

Modibo Maiga helped himself to a brace as mid-table Sochaux posted a 3-0 home success over Toulouse, who remain third behind Lyon and Paris St Germain on goal difference.

Striker Maiga, who was a target for Newcastle United in the transfer window and briefly went on strike, opened the scoring for Sochaux after just nine minutes.

The hosts had to wait until three minutes from time to score again as Maiga found the target before substitute Cedric Bakambu notched the third with a minute to go.

Montpellier produced a stirring late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw away to Bordeaux and deny their opponents a much-needed victory as both teams finished with 10 men.

Bordeaux took an 18th minute lead through Cheick Diabate and appeared to be coping with Marc Planus' 25th minute sending off by extending their advantage on 50 minutes through Michael Ciani.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men with nine minutes to go when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was dismissed before Younes Belhanda converted a penalty on 88 minutes.

And, in the final minute, Hilton pounced for an equaliser for Montpellier, who move level on points with the top three teams in the table.

Nancy remain bottom of the table and without a win in nine matches after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by promoted Evian.

Loosemy Karaboue put Nancy ahead on 53 minutes, but Cedric Mongongu's penalty on 62 minutes secured Evian a point.

On-loan Arsenal striker Joel Campbell was on target as Lorient secured a 2-0 home victory over lowly Valenciennes.

Costa Rican youngster Campbell opened the scoring for Lorient midway through the first half before Yann Jouffre made certain of the points on 68 minutes.

Nice climbed a place in the standings after leaving it late to snatch a 1-1 draw away to Caen following an exciting final 10 minutes.

Pierre-Alain Frau made the breakthrough for Caen in the 80th minute, but Eric Mouloungui equalised for Nice with a minute left.

St Etienne and Auxerre remain in mid-table after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Former Chelsea striker Ben Sahar gave Auxerre a fifth minute lead, but Josua Guilavogui equalised for the hosts seven minutes before half-time.

Dijon and Ajaccio also played out a 1-1 draw as Eric Bautheac's 41st minute leveller earned a point for the hosts after Mehdi Mustefa had put the visitors ahead on 18 minutes.
