Elsewhere, Granada were held on home soil and Sporting Gijon picked up their first point.
Levante moved up to third in the table with a 3-1 victory over Espanyol.
Ruben Suarez gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot on 14 minutes after Rui Fonte had felled Juanlu in the box and repeated the trick from another spot-kick early in the second half when he was brought down by Jordi Amat, the defender seeing red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Despite being down to 10 men Espanyol responded as Hector Moreno turned in Walter Pandiani's scuffed shot.
However, Jose Barkero sealed the points with a stunning left-footed effort 15 minutes from time before Espanyol's misery was completed with a second red card, this time for Pandiani as he barged Nano in an off-the-ball incident.
Goals by Victor Casadesus and Gonzalo Castro guided Real Mallorca to their second win of the season as they came from behind to beat Real Sociedad 2-1.
Mallorca did not get off to the best of starts, Carlos Vela hitting the post for Sociedad after 12 minutes before Imanol Agirretxe put the visitors ahead two minutes later.
Carlos Martinez sent in a right-wing cross which found Agirretxe who slotted home with a right-footed shot low into the centre of the goal.
However, the hosts responded, Jose Luis Marti firing a long-range effort over the bar before the hosts equalised five minutes after the visitors' opener, Victor crashing in right-footed from the centre of the box from Nsue's pass.
Mallorca took the lead for the first time in the game four minutes into the second half.
Ivan Ramis passed from the left of the penalty area to Castro who sent a 20-yard shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
Fran Rico salvaged a point for Granada with an excellent volley midway through the second-half in an otherwise poor 1-1 draw against Osasuna.
The visitors took the lead after 28 minutes when Pape Diakhate's error allowed Raul Garcia to score his first goal since returning to the club with a simple side-footed finish into an empty net.
Granada struggled to create chances throughout the 90 minutes but were handed a lifeline when poor defending by Osasuna allowed Rico acres of space just inside the area and he crashed home Ikechukwu Uche's cross with 25 minutes remaining.
Sporting Gijon and Racing Santander failed to trouble the scorers as they played out a 0-0 draw.
Both sides have struggled to find form so far and their troubles were obvious throughout a disappointing display.
Gijon will, however, be pleased to have finally got off the mark, while Racing have edged themselves back out of the relegation zone.
Sunday's evening kick-off saw Real Zaragoza hold high-flying Malaga to a goalless draw.
The big-spending visitors had the best of the opportunities in a keenly-fought contest, but were unable to force a breakthrough.
Malaga now sit on the fringes of the top four, while Zaragoza are edging towards halfway.
