Real Mallorca captain Jose Nunes has been ruled out of all footballing action for the next seven months with a knee injury.

The defender suffered the injury during his team's 1-0 defeat to Italian club Napoli in the Ciutat de Palma trophy last weekend.

The Spanish club explained the extent of the damage caused to Nunes' knee in a statement on their official website.

"After new tests carried out on his left knee, they have found a more serious problem, a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, confirming the initial suspicions which had not been confirmed by the first tests," read the statement.

"Added to this injury, he also has a tear in the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus, and a level II sprain of the collateral external ligament of the left knee."

The head of the medical department of the club, Dr Tomeu Munar further explained: "Our initial suspicion was that it was the cruciate ligament, however after two magnetic resonances and not seeing a complete tear, we informed of the visual injury.

"However, after checking new opinions, we have finally confirmed the worst news regarding the complete tear of his anterior cruciate ligament. Monday (today) will be the operation and he will be in the hospital for four or five days. His recovery time will be longer than we expected."

This implies that the 34-year-old Portuguese centre-back will miss practically the entire 2011/12 campaign.

Mallorca, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Spanish top flight last season and finished 17th in the table, are monitoring the transfer market for a replacement.
