Ajax scored three goals in the last 16 minutes to claim a 4-1 win over PSV Eindhoven and climb to the top of the Eredivisie table.

The Amsterdam giants suffered a shock cup defeat by rock-bottom FC Volendam in midweek but bounced back against their bitter rivals to record a sixth straight league victory.

Elsewhere, AZ Alkmaar were unable to regain top spot as they slipped to fourth after a 1-1 draw with lowly Vitesse Arnhem.

Uruguay international Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Ajax in the 27th minute with his sixth goal in eight league games before Ibrahim Afellay drew PSV levelled within 11 minutes of the restart.

Ajax coach Marco van Basten made a change shortly after with Miralem Sulejmani coming on for Dennis Rommedahl and that had the desired effect as Sulejmani put Ajax back in front in the 74th minute.

PSV defender Erik Pieters scored an own goal four minutes later to seal the three points for Ajax, with Leonardo adding a fourth goal at the death moments after replacing Suarez.

AZ were held to a 1-1 draw away to Vitesse Arnhem in one of the three later kick-offs.

Ferreira Ari gave AZ an 18th-minute lead but Santi Kolk drew the home side level in the 51st minute.

That allowed Groningen to move into third place following a 3-0 home win against second-bottom De Graafschap.

Danny Aolla opened the scoring on the half-hour mark before Andreas Granqvist and Marcus Berg struck in the last 13 minutes to seal the three points.

FC Twente and Feyenoord remain in mid-table after a 1-1 draw in Enschede.

Blaise N'Kufo gave Twente the lead with a 13th-minute penalty before Roy Makaay also converted from the spot in the 53rd minute.
