Eredivise leaders AZ Alkmaar extended their lead at the top of the table to four points as they beat VVV Venlo, whilst all the chasing pack dropped points.

Whilst AZ were winning at Venlo, Ajax lost at Groningen, whilst FC Twente were held at home.

AZ made no mistake in their contest at De Koel with Rasmus Elm firing them ahead on the half-hour.

They sealed the win after the break with Adam Maher and Simon Poulsen scoring before VVV grabbed a late consolation through Robert Cullen.

Twente lost pace as they were held to a shock 2-2 draw by winless and bottom-of-the-table Excelsior.

Twente went ahead through Ola John in the first half, but then the visitors looked on course for victory as with just five minutes remaining Darren Maatsen claimed two goals in the space of 60 seconds.

But then in injury time Luuk de Jong rescued a point for Co Adriaanse's men - who are now in third.

Ajax had started the day in third, but they drop to fourth as they slipped to a 1-0 loss at Groningen.

In an incident which saw Gregory van der Wiel sent off for a second yellow, Groningen were awarded a penalty on the hour mark which Leandro Bacuna finished.

PSV Eindhoven took advantage of Twente and Ajax's failure to win as they climbed into second with a 2-0 win at NEC Nijmegen.

But Fred Rutten's men left it very late at De Goffert with Zakaria Labyad not putting them ahead until five minutes from time. Just moments later Tim Matavz doubled their lead.

Finally on a day of poor results for the top sides, Feyenoord missed the chance to move level with PSV and Twente in second as they were comprehensivley beaten 3-0 at home by ADO Den Haag.

The Verhoek brothers John and Wesley combined to put Den Haag in control as they each grabbed a goal before the interval.

Tjarron Cherry added a third just after the break to give the visitors a surprinsgly comfortable win, which takes them up to eleventh.
