McInally: Continuity asset for Fergie's men

Also see

It's a dangerous game, making pre-season predictions. But with just days to go before the big kick-off in the Premier League, the Soccer Saturday gang have gallantly agreed to put their necks - and their credibility - on the line.

Who will lift the Premier League trophy in May? Which manager has made the shrewdest buy? Who is most likely to do a Derby?

And which member of the panel has been hogging the sun-loungers all summer?

Read on as the finest pundits on the box use their encyclopaedic football knowledge to predict the new season's stars, strugglers and stragglers, as well as give each other some gentle ribbing!

Former Scotland, Celtic and Aston Villa striker Alan McInally takes up the challenge...

Champions

I think Manchester United should still be the favourites. Ronaldo is staying, defensively they're still fine and now Fergie is trying to bring in another striker. I expect that to be Berbatov and if they get him, I think they will be unstoppable. I know Chelsea have spent money and I think Deco is capable of unlocking anybody but with the new manager and new ideas, it might take them a bit more time to settle. Fergie has continuity in his side and I think that's why they'll win it.

Champions League spots

I'd hope that Liverpool will be better this year because really they've been miles away from challenging. I do think that Arsenal might finish a bit closer this time. They fell away quite tamely last year but Adebayor staying is a big boost. I think Wenger has to spend money on another defender - he might play Song in there - and although they've lost Hleb and Flamini, I expect them to play good football again. Manchester United and Chelsea will be the two main protagonists though, so I'm tipping Chelsea as runners-up, followed by Arsenal and then Liverpool.

Fit for fifth

Tottenham Hotspur. Of all the teams I've seen so far this pre-season - and I know sometimes you can't draw too much but it gives you some kind of idea - Tottenham are my favourites for fifth spot. Maybe, just maybe, if they can keep Berbatov, it could be higher but as I've already said, I don't think he'll stay. Spurs were excellent in the Feyernoord Jubilee Tournament in Rotterdam and Darren Bent's looking good. I think Ramos needs to bring in a defender but he's bought some real quality football players and if anyone's going to break that top four this time, it might be Tottenham. I think it will be a really tough season for Everton - I don't see them finishing as high up this time - but big things will be expected at Manchester City. They've spent some money and Mark Hughes has managed to keep key players like Richard Dunne.

Surprise package

I think Luka Modric is really special, a very, very good football player. I think he could be the difference between Tottenham finishing eighth, or fourth or fifth as I tipped them earlier. He is a Deco-type player - small, with good balance, good feet, and an ability to unlock defences with a pass. I think he'll be someone that people want to pay money to watch play.

Going down

There's no doubt it will be really difficult for the new boys Stoke, Hull and West Brom. It's Hull's first time in the top flight and Stoke have been there before but haven't spent an awful lot of money. I think both will go back down. But I fancy West Brom to have a decent season. They play good football, it'll all depend on how many goals they can score and not concede at the other end - obviously that sounds simple but they'll have to be watertight. But I think it will also be a tough season for Blackburn and Bolton so it'll be between Blackburn, Bolton and West Brom for that other relegation spot.

Golden boot

Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo taking penalties, taking free kicks, and generally just being Ronaldo, makes it difficult to see past him. He's an exceptional player. Adebayor and Drogba will be there or thereabouts and I think Torres might have an even better season than last time but I still fancy Ronaldo to come out on top. As for how he'll be received after the Real Madrid saga, well, fans are fickle but they can be equally forgiving - as long as you're doing the business.

Best buy

I don't want to harp on too much about Tottenham but this could be Darren Bent's year. Spurs spent a lot of money spend on him last year and he didn't really manage to cope with that pressure but this year, if Berbatov goes, and with no Keane, I reckon he could turn out to be a belated 'best buy'. I'm tipping him to get between 18 and 20 goals.

Barking buy

Not so much a player for this one, more of an approach, and it's Paul Ince's at Blackburn. I think he's looking around the lower leagues to find a gem, which is what Lawrie Sanchez tried to do at Fulham without success. It might not be Paul's fault - he might not have a lot to spend and have had to alter his targets accordingly - but he could struggle with some of the players he's brought in.

Soccer Saturday summer slacker

I would have normally have said Le Tiss but because he's just got married, I expect him to have been put on a diet by his wife! Charlie Nicholas has definitely been burning the candle at both ends, however. I'm expecting him to come back at least a stone overweight...

wot is it with everyone and tottenham hotspurs, every person on this have overlooked villa and everton its a joke. Just because they have spent big everyone thinks there gonna crack the top 4 easily. Mst people are also saying Robbie Keane is the best buy but for 20 million, no way. Unless he gets over 20 goals this season liverpool have overspent.

Chelsea to win the league. Man UTD, Liverpool and Spurs for Champions League places. Arsenal in 5th place. Surprise package is Gareth Bale if he keeps fit. Stoke, Hull and Bolton to go down. Paul Robinson is the best buy. Barking buy will be Dimitar Berbatov when he goes to Man U

i agree with this, but i believe spurs will break top 4 this year, i no pre season aint nothing to go by but we look really good this year. man u to win the league, chelsea 2nd, arsenal 3rd and then us close behind. as for relegation, its definetely goin 2 be stoke and hull, but i think the west ham are going to join em as well

I agree with you comments on Spurs and Blackburn, but it seems to me a lot of pundits are completly writinf off Liverpool. I think we could be the surprise package this season and win the title.

As a Spurs Fan I totally concur with Alans comments. In fact I'm asking Tottenham to make him a lifetime member of the club. I personally think we should let Manchester United have Berbatov, his attitude is wrong.

I think theres some good points here, i certainly feel tottenham are going in the right direction and im an Arsenal fan, with the signings of Modric and Dos Santos in the midfield and Gomes in goal is a really good buy. I still think Arsenal will be there or there abouts, i actually like this years team more than last years, Nasri looks good, Walcott is looking sharper, even Bendtner is showing good form in Pre-season and Vela is a great player watch this space! Title will me between Arsenal, Chelsea or Utd with 4th place between Liverpool, Portsmouth or Tottenham, closely followed by Villa and Man-City. Down go Bolton, Hull and Stoke.

Arsenal r going to win the title this season because we have good players in our squad and soon we will have a few more players back from injury but i do have to say if arsenal dont suceed then i think it will be the goalkeeper and i think wenger should have signed a new and well known keeper to replace lehmann.

Adam Wells says...

Some good points made Alan, but have to disagree with the Darren Bent as Best Buy, he was last year so should not count, I honestly think you would have to look at either Modric or more likley Bogswina for Chelsea for that.. As for people who can not accept when a team is not looking good i think your teams for the drop are right and the two teams to break the top 4 will be Villa or Spurs.. O'neil has brought very wisly and is a brilliant manager and spurs are starting to play football like Arsenal keep the ball and look like having a stronger squad so i hope a few injuries will help us!

Michael Davis says...

You are saying about darren bent being the top striker maybe he could. But my money is on someone whos been struggling to overcome a very bad injury and now with an excellent pre season behind him i precidt that dean ashton and hopefully a fit craig bellamy will get west ham into the top 6.come on you irons.

Martin Maud (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...

What's this? The Tottenham fan club?! Darren Bent as 'Best Buy'? Do me a favour! Not only was he signed 12 months ago, but he was awful last year. You can't tell me that no other club has signed anyone who will do well this year! As for your opinions about Blackburn and Ince - signing Paul Robinson (that's the England keeper, by the way) is 'trawling the lower leagues' is it? Ok, we may have lost Friedel, but he is 37 and would only have a year or two left. Robbo is a good replacement. Bentley is a big-head whose attitude was all wrong and will be well-suited to Spurs. Rovers have always made a habit of finding 'gems' - look at Nelsen, Samba, Pedersen, Derbyshire - all brought to the club for peanuts and from relative obscurity and are now established Prem players. We might not hit the heights of last year, but we won't be anywhere near relegation!

Joel Rust (Arsenal fan) says...

I think everyone is counting Arsenal out of the title race already, this happened last year and we almost won it. Wenger obviously knows what he's doing and whilst we've lost some important players we've also brought in some players who I think will shine such as Nasri and Wenger has said he's in the market for another midfielder. So although I can see where the critics are coming from, their not always right last season many people thought Spurs would finish above us and we only finished 4 points adrift of Man Utd and would have really won the league were it not for a mix of bad form and injuries towards the season close which were a result of each other. COME ON THE GUNNERS

Stuart Marshall (Newcastle United fan) says...

I think Aston Villa is the team with the best chance of breaking into the top 4. Probably finish 5th. They scored a ton of goals last season and have improve the back 4 tremendously this off season. And don't forget the Martin O'Neil factor. Spurs have revamped their side adn I think it will take time for them to gel. Probably 7 or 8th place.

Liam Keating (Chelsea fan) says...

I think that people favour Manchester United too much and they get away with things that other clubs would be slated for like diving, just look at the penalties they get at old trafford, but this year as long as the refs buck up their ideas chelsea will easily win the league and will push strongly in europe.

Mathew Sawtell (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...

I have to agree about the worst buy, being a Blackburn Fan I feel that relegation is on the cards this year at Ewood. why do we chase the MK Dons captain??? Barking mad. Not good enough, and will never be good enough. Really sad day for Blackburn when he walked in the door.
