Charlie's PL picks

Wenger's men can finally come good this season, says Nicholas

Last updated: 15th August 2008

It's a dangerous game, making pre-season predictions. But with just days to go before the big kick-off in the Premier League, the Soccer Saturday gang have gallantly agreed to put their necks - and their credibility - on the line.

Who will lift the Premier League trophy in May? Which manager has made the shrewdest buy? Who is most likely to do a Derby?

And which member of the panel has been hogging the sun-loungers all summer?

Read on as the finest pundits on the box use their encyclopaedic football knowledge to predict the new season's stars, strugglers and stragglers, as well as give each other some gentle ribbing!

It's time for former Scotland, Celtic and Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas to take the baton...

Champions

I think most of the boys - myself included - went for Manchester United last season but I'm going for Arsenal this time around. They had it in the palm of their hands last season - they led at Old Trafford, they led at Stamford Bridge - but I think Eduardo's injury at Birmingham really took its toll. I believe they'll be stronger and a bit more ruthless this season. I think they had 13 draws last season so they'll going to have to gamble a bit more though to convert a few of those into wins. There is still time in the transfer window and if Arsene Wenger could get Xabi Alonso from Liverpool, I'd fancy them even more. I think Chelsea are a little bit more lightweight than they have been in the past. How are Scolari and the new boys going to blend in? They certainly look like they'll be more adventurous and more attacking but that could leave them vulnerable defensively.

Champions League spots

I don't think anyone else is quite good enough yet to break the top four, so I think Manchester United will be second, Liverpool third and Chelsea fourth. There are three or four teams that will have good seasons - Everton, Portsmouth, Villa and Spurs will all be in the frame - but I don't see them being as consistent as the other four.

Fit for fifth

I quite like who Aston Villa are buying. They've got a good blend of pace and energy. I do like Mark Hughes at Man City but I think there's too much turmoil there at the moment. I also love Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth - I love the way they play and they'll be close again - but I'm tipping Villa for the fifth spot.

Surprise package

There are always so many to look out for in the Premier League - look at Santa Cruz last season. But I was surprised that Everton let Andy Johnson go. I think he's more than capable of keeping Fulham up, I fancy him to return to form and to be knocking on the international door again in four or five months' time, so he's my dark horse.

Going down

The real pressure is on Hull and Stoke, not so much West Brom in my opinion. I know Tony Mowbray is new to the Premier League but he knows that the club have been there before, that the fans understand the pressures, and as a result I think he will probably be quite an adventurous manager. He's waited a long time to test himself against the best. Now that chance has arrived, I think he will have an attacking philosophy and I expect his side to stay up. Stoke I think look the weakest, Hull will probably still be a bit naive and I think Blackburn will have a tough season, too. Paul Ince deserves time and respect but I think with Bentley going, Santa Cruz seemingly on the verge of a move every day and Warnock apparently trying to get out, I think they might have a few problems.

Golden boot

I don't think there'll be a new guy to blow us away so it'll be one of the usual suspects that includes Torres, Ronaldo, Santa Cruz - wherever he is playing - and of course Adebayor. I'm still convinced that Robin Van Persie has got 25+ goals in him. Obviously we need to see him fit but I think he's ready for the new campaign and I'm tipping him to have a major season.

Best buy

I do think there are still a few to come in so this is a potential one: I believe Liverpool are still chasing Gareth Barry but I also think Arsenal would love to get Xabi Alonso so that's one to look out for. I have to mention AJ again here. I think Fulham have improved on last year in terms of belief and in the fact that they've got someone who can score goals for them. They were on a knife-edge last year but I've always believed - and still do - that Roy Hodgson is a top coach. His signings have been refreshing this season and he's brought in people who will play a disciplined system.

Barking buy

I do think that Robbie Keane's price was extremely high. He's a very good signing but £20m+ was a hell of a lot. He's a good player and Torres needs a partner but I'm not convinced that Rafa Benitez is, by nature, a man who likes to play 4-4-2. I'm not surprised Robbie went there because he had been linked to them so often but I do think the value of the transfer was a bit obscene.

Soccer Saturday summer slacker

I've heard that a few of the boys reckon I've been taking it a bit too easy but I can deny that. Ok, I've been in Majorca but let me tell you, I've been training hard, my weight's down and I'm fighting fit ready for the new season. Thommo will be the most bronzed because he sits in the sun all day. It costs him a fortune in sun lotion though - and that's just to cover his nose! Jeff has been working hard; he's been back early preparing but the big disappointment is likely to be Paul Merson, or 'The Muffin Man' as I like to call him. He's a cert to have been stuffing himself with muffins all summer!

I personally think that chelsea will win the prem no problem!!! but i think arsenal will struggle to even stay in the top 4 they got rid of experiance and replaced it with youth... as per usual but i still love the way that arsenal play when ever i watch them i love it as i like the passing game i think man city will stuggle being a city supporter myself i think last season was great but after beating united twice and finishing in the top ten for the first time in a while sven still got the sack .... someone tell me why. we will strugle because of all of the action off field i think it will affect the players. i think jo will be ok butit will take him a while to score goals as hes so young and has never played in england before... i dont know who will be relegated this year i think it will be tight as hull, stoke and west brom have decent players if anything i think it all ends with there will to say in the prem as they all have a good chance of staying up. the top scorer will be torres i think but i belive that robbie keane will struggle as he is used to being the number 1 striker.

I completely agree with Charlie's prediction except assigning the golden boot to Nasri. Nasri will serve arsenal beyond what Rolando has done to MU last year. I feel that nasri will score 30+ and have the golden boot. This year will totaly be arsenals season.

I agree with charlie, if youlok on last year, we should have won the league hands down bit for a couple of injuries to key players and of coarse that eduardo challange witch frightened a few of the young ones. but i must say that we are stronger then ever and will learn from grinding out results at the back end of the season, Nasri is a better attacking midfielder then hleb was, hleb had skill but no end product. arsene wenger is deffinetley going to fill the gap left by flaminis departure and i want inler. big powerful and will guide diaby to be the next viera. we have quite a good opening couple of fixtures so come on you gooners

im an arsenal fan n i think if wenger signs xabi alonso from liverpool there will be more experience in midfield to put the pressure of the strikers, because when robert pires n ljungberg were here they were scoring about 15 goals each per season which use to take the pressure of the strikers but now rosicky scores a couple in the premier league and helb who only scored 1 goal last season in the premier league.and because of this there has been lots of pressure on the likes of adebayor, van persie and bentder to score.so if wenger signs a player like xabi alonso there will be much more goals coming from the midfield and also arsenal dont score many goals from far ranges whereas a player like alonso can.

I think charlie's right, all summer people have been writing us off even Arsenal fans themselves!! We've got as good a chance if not better this season only three players went in the summer and 1 of them hardly played last season. I think chelsea is a tough call they r either going to be amazingly brilliant or an absolute flop this season, i do think they have weakened in the past year and a half conceding loads more goals but its a tough call. United have a good chance of not winning it this year as i think other teams will be more hungry for it. Ronaldo going to have an average season probs because of his ego and its tough to match what he did last season. This is liverpool's best chance this season as they finally have a decent strike partnership and sold pennant but need decent wingers. Golden boot to either torres adebeyor bent not ronaldo. Bring on the new season!!

Love it, Charlie a Gooner all the Way. I am backing Arsenal to win the league this year. If Van Persie stays fit the front line will be unstoppable. I think Villa will be a suprise package this year

im an arsenal fan we need to keep players like adebayor vanpesrsie fabregas rosisky fit and we need someone to help fabregas in midfield if we do that and take are chances and keep more clean sheets than we will win the premiership and maybe the fa cup

No way blackburn are going down this season, I also see the usually reliable Sky Sports presenters are jumping on the band wagon and assuming everyone is leaving Blackburn....we are NOT a feeder club and Roque & Warnock will BOTh be staying put....end of!!!

I dont think xabi will be the right buy.He is more of a fabregas than a flamini.I would like gokhan inler to join us.Hes got the strength and would make it easier for fab to play his natural game.

I think it will be close between Man utd (1) and chelsea (2)for first and second, it will depend on if united get berbatov who will score 20 plus goals a season and if chelsea can get Drogba back to his best. then Arsenal will finish 3rd with Liverpool close behind them in 4th. to finsh 5th it will be close between everton, villa and pompey. And to go down Hull, stoke and westbrom.

Pete Harrison (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Think the top four will be as you were last season, If we can get another decent striker, then possibly 5th for us. To go down, has to be Stoke, Hull and WBA, they simply won't have the class to stay up!

Kristian Duce (Aston Villa fan) says...

well done charlie, the first one to suggest villa could get a top 5 finish. Also well done for not going on about spurs. Another thing you have got right is robbie keane definetly not the best buy of the season as some have suggested.

i agree with charlie i think arsenal will win the title i think wenger has made the right choice to keep gallas as captain i think he has learned his lesson and i think chelsea are good but to overrated arsenal to win the prem with adebayor and van persie wenger is a genius!

Char-lie,char-lie..char-lie,char-lie! You are a ledge but how can we win with Eboue and Senderos playing? Yes- we have a massive chance with Xabi, I agree. Winners Liverpool, 2nd Chelsea, 3rd ManU, 4th Spurs (boo) us 5th. Carling Cup West Ham, Champ Lgue Chelsea, best buy(s) Bently and Modric(boo), barking buy maybe us and Nasri as we spent 12m on someone we don't really need. Surprise package could be Pompey. I hope I'm wrong!

Has there ever been a year when Charlie Nicholas hasn't thought Arsenal would win the league?

Liam Hawkes says...

I cant believe your saying Chelsea will finish 4th? Chelsea have the best players in team and squad, we have the experience of manager and players to go on and push ourselves over the line, which we just couldnt do last year. Agree with the Arsenal point though, they will be stronger this year and ill look forward to watching them again and i also agree on the barking buy of Robbie Keane, alot of money for him and he looked lost last night for Liverpool.

i reckon man utd to be champs ....closely followed by chelsea, arsenal and liverpool.....golden boot to torres, sunderland to finish top north east club and go close to a euro spot and hull, stoke and bolton for the dreaded drop.....haway the lads
