Merson: Keane on Liverpool's strike force
It's a dangerous game, making pre-season predictions. But with just days to go before the big kick-off in the Premier League, the Soccer Saturday gang have gallantly agreed to put their necks - and their credibility - on the line.
Who will lift the Premier League trophy in May? Which manager has made the shrewdest buy? Who is most likely to do a Derby?
And which member of the panel has been hogging the sun-loungers all summer?
Read on as the finest pundits on the box use their encyclopaedic football knowledge to predict the new season's stars, strugglers and stragglers, as well as give each other some gentle ribbing!
Step up former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson...

My tip is Chelsea. I think Scolari will go for it and try and win games rather than just not lose them. They've certainly got the players to win games so I fancy them. Take away some of Ronaldo's 40-odd goals from last season - because I can't see him doing it again this season - and Manchester United aren't going to win it.
I think Manchester United will be runners-up, followed by Arsenal and then Liverpool. For me the signing of the season is Robbie Keane but - and I don't mean this rudely - does Rafa Benitez know how to win the league over here? I'm not sure - last year he rested Torres at Portsmouth away, which is probably one of the hardest places to win at.
I'm going for Tottenham. Ramos has bought well but I still think they're crying out for a centre-half. Then again, so are Arsenal.
I don't like putting pressure on Harry but I think Portsmouth are very much the dark horses. Their pairing up front is up there with the top four's two up front. And they'll play every week.

I think Bolton will struggle. And, hopefully not because I'd like Paul Ince to do well, I reckon Blackburn will too. They've lost their best player in Bentley and although Santa Cruz was on fire last year, all of a sudden people will be saying, 'Right, let's mark him out of the game'. The promoted sides all need a good start. The only chance of Stoke staying up is if Rory Delap stays fit because he's got a long throw. He gets the ball in the box or wins a corner, and so sooner or later teams will buckle because of that. West Brom will struggle to score goals in the Premier League - and I don't think keeping Kevin Phillips would have made much of a difference; when David Nugent made the step up from Preston to Portsmouth, he couldn't score for toffee, so it doesn't always work that way. The Baggies do like to get the ball down and play but I don't know whether they'll be good enough to break teams down.
Fernando Torres...but you don't know how many games he'll play. A real dark horse in this category for me is Jermain Defoe. I think he'll play every week and I don't think there's a more natural goalscorer in the league - bar Michael Owen, but Newcastle just don't make enough chances for him.

This is a hard one, because really you judge that by Christmas, but I'm going for Robbie Keane - a great buy in my opinion. Keane and Torres will rip defences apart. The thing with Liverpool before was that if Torres wasn't scoring, they were finding it hard to score goals. And I tell you, Berbatov won't score as many goals now. Keane will make loads of goals but he scores goals too - Wayne Rooney's a similar kind of player but he doesn't score as many as Robbie Keane.
I'm likely to look an idiot if I turn round and say, 'That's a bit too much for him' or, 'They shouldn't have bought him' and then he goes and scores ten goals in ten games! Of course Fulham have paid too much for Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora but they could keep Fulham up - they're both very quick and good finishers - and if they do that, it's money well spent.
I've heard Le Tiss has trimmed down so I reckon Charlie Nicholas might be the one to have let himself go over the summer - I've heard it's harder to lose the weight when you get old!

as an arsenal fan I think that we,re not giving Arsenal enough credit, I know we will score lots of goals this season With, rvp, adebyor, Vella, Bendtner, and Eduardo when all fit, Hleb was a good midfielder but didn,t score enough for me, like we had with Freddy and Pires, as long as wenger.pease play theo on that right side of midfield and NOT EBUOE.HE SUCKS. bUT MY POINT IS WE can get some goals from midfield with theo and Rosicky on the flanks as for the middle we will definitely buy a midfielder..........if Villa still wants to sell Barry or Liverpool wants to sell aLONSO they are both cup tied in EUROPE so the price for these guys should go down if the want to sell. I think we arsenal fans are being too hard on Senderos he was playing real well when Toure was away on African Cup DUTY....he will improve he usually have a a good game the makes one critical error ....but all in all I dont see why Wenger cant play Diaby in middle with Fabregas

I think Chelsea will come good this season but as for the other three I feel that it will be liverpool 2nd, Man U 3rd, Spurs 4th Everton 5th and Arsenal in a lowly 6th, The 'French Man' failed to buy well this summer and (thankfully) this will affect the long term prospects of the Gunners ... They will however win the Carling Cup, Man U will get the FA Cup, Super Spurs in the Final of the UAFA but not to win it (never mind we will have CL next year), To go down, Man C as Hughes will be a flop, Blackburn and WBA ... Real Madrid will win the CL .....

Its true that newcastle dont make enough chances for michael ' Sicknote' owen , but be fair , there arent many players who can cross the ball from st james park to the royal rvi infirmary! Fancy gutierrez for it this season ! reckon i agree with your predictions though . Chelsea nearly stole it last year with a lesser manager and squad . Its all there to be had for big phil!

Merse I agree with you when you say that Zamora & Johnson were overpriced, but surely Keane was as well? £20million for a 28 year old seems an awful lot of money. Even the great Thierry Henry didnt fetch quite that sum when he left Arsenal for Barca even if he was a year older.

Whats with all these pundits tipping blackburn to go down? Are the suddenly going to fall apart just because bentley and friedel left? Robinson in with a point to prove, and villanueva could genuinely be the bargain of the season! Surely the likes of hull, west brom, stoke, fulham, poss boro are far more likely to struggle than a well-established top ten team? Me thinks these boys might just read all the southern based press and believe all the hype. I would be putting the rovers in the same grouping as man city, portsmouth and everton, ie, looking down on the bottom half, not staring up!!

Have you gone mad Merse?!?! Blackburn to go down!?! OK, we've lost two big players but we still have enough quality to be in the top 10!

I agree with the 'magic man' Merson on some things but the Arsenal finishing fourth nah, we just missed last year by four points due to injuries we look the business this season trust me something is telling me LUCK will be on our side. And lets face it that's what every team needs to carry you throughout the season you know the injury free squad, refereeing decisions etc. Any man can win when things go his way, it's the man who overcomes adversity that is the true champion.¿ Jock Ewing quotes ...

i being a manutd fan will obviously say they will win the title.Buut i do believe it will closer than last year.Liverpool i think have bought well and i do think they will finally get it right this year and finish second.Chelsea to finish third and arsenal at fourth.Tottenham will push arsenal hard for 4th and will come 5th.Stoke and hull for the drop. The last spot will be fought b/w bolton, middlesborough, balckburn and fulham.

I have do agree with some of your predictions but you know merse arsenal are the team to look out for this season. Also you have to look out for young walcott. As no one is really giving him any attention at the moment but he will turn out to be like the gabriel abonglahor of last season. i also understand the fact that Robbie Keane has moved to liverpool and will partner torres and everyone is saying thats its going to be the best partenership .but nobody is really thinking about what arsenal strike force can actually achieve as we still have the likes of adebayor who came second in the top goalscorers last season but you shall watch and learn MERSON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sort of agree with Paul, Pompey could well sneak 5th but i worry that Europe will drain a small squad. Realistically a top 8 finish would be great with european football post christmas a bonus - for the title its between united and chelsea - for the drop, i worry about stoke and hull - too many workmen not enugh artisans - probably joined by middlesbro or bolton, both are disjointed and have few goalscorers to get them out of a hole

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have made some good buys during the off season. They will all prove to be extremely competative. However, none of them have Fergie leading them and a player of Giggs calibre who has won 10 league tiltes. United's football is just a pleasure to watch. Sure we will come unstuck in some games but the consistency factor in playing the beautiful game cannot be ignored. Anderson who as yet has not provided the finishing aspects will come along in leaps and bounds and be the added difference to Ronaldo's goal scoring prowess from last season. United for the league and Champs league again.

To my good friend Oliver Sheehan! Arsenal can never be classed as under achievers last season because before the league began Arsenal were outside the first five and they finished 3rd. Why don't you people give give credit where it is due. I wonder how Man u, Chelsea and Liverpool players will react after having your mate's leg chopped off and then conceeding a dodgy penalty in the same game. I Wonder what everyone will do if it was Wayne Rooney at the receiving end of that tackle?. You can refer to the Quotes of both Cappello and Blatter about referees' decisions . We will see if Ronaldo will score 40 goals plus this season. I will give him credit unlike some people even if Man u didn't win the premiership. The way Arsenal is being knocked down is the way Kevin Phillips was being treated whilst being the highest goal scorer on the continent. Arsenal is a unique club, one of the that will lure Real Madrid, Juventus etc to the Emirates cup. When Man U inspire England to win a competetion internationally that is when i will believe the hype about this Man u generation. The Trebble generation played some fantastic football which can never be said of this team for if it is England would have qualified for the Euro 08. They are the local team of the first 4 and it will always rub off when decisions are made and most importantly when tackles are made. Arsenal would probably win the league in France year in year out (please don't mention the quality of the premiership as it has never rubbed off the English game in general. We enjoy being in the band wagon whilst deliberately forgetting the primary concern of every English football fan. Make the Arsenal way of football your priority and you will a few cups within 10 years with a beautiful game on top of that.

I think Merson's predictions are spot on. The race for the title is a close call between Chelsea and Man Utd. Both have excellent defences but Chelsea have more up front at the moment. Arsenal and Liverpool will not challenge for the title untill they sort out the centre back positions properly, Man Utd and Chelsea are prepared to spend 20 million on quality defenders for a title challenge. Berbatov will struggle if he stays at Spurs and he needs a move to Man Utd, with ammo supplied by Rooney and Co he could be awesome. Spurs could break into the top four if they get their act together but more so if the Arsenal manager sticks with the trio of Gallas, Toure and Senderos in defence. Aston Villa could be with Spurs and Man City will be hard to beat but Everton have lost their momentum and will struggle. I predict the newly promoted teams to go straight back down but i am looking forward to seeing Hull ruffle a few feathers.

How can Merson compare Phillips to David Nugent. Can he not remember Phillips is tried and tested in the Premier League and was the European Golden Boot winner back in 99/2000

Well, i think this title will again go to the wire, Manchester jubilating again, only if they get another 15-20 goal scorer to supplement Rooney and Carlos. Scolari will struggle with the dinamix of premiership and it will be too late to make mends. Arsenal will have a good start but will break post x-mas. They do not have the mental strength and experience, coupled with new lads in the team. Liverpool will push for the second spot but will settle for third. prediction, Manu, Chelsea, Arsenal, Totternham, Pompey, Villa. Torres for golden boot

"JOHN TICKLE"..Gerrard is considered to be the player who drives the midfield....plus playing as a sole striker is not the same as playing in a five man midfield...it is not about who is more influential...or even abt fitness...it is abt the roles that those two play...if torres has scored a goal against a smaller team then it makes all the sense in the world to take him off... and as far as the top 4 is concerned....a fact is that until any of LIVERPOOL or ARSENAL spend as much as chelsea or manu....the top two will never change... for all the MANU and chelsea fans...your title challenges etc...are all driven by money....a chimp can manage the taeam and force a title challenge

Evrything is starting to look much like last year. The key here is to ignore opinions of people voting for their own team but weigh up the consensus among the neutrals. Like last year, nearly all, and pundits too, are going for Man Utd or Chelsea with Arsenal and Liverpool to battle for 3rtd and 4th. It was called accurately last year and I see more of the same this season. One thing of note: Normally its the Liverpool fans losing the run of them selves at this stage of the season but it seems that its the gooners who are delusional this time round!

Although I'm an Arsenal follower, I think that Chelsea is a real deal. If you look at their football at the end of the last season, with the additition of Deco, Bosingwa ... then you can hardly doubt Chelsea's title credential. They are older but they've been the best club physically for years.
