Barry Bannan was thrilled after being named man-of-the-match on his first competitive start for Scotland as they beat Lithuania 1-0 at Hampden Park.

Bannan's cross found Steven Naismith to make the breakthrough five minutes into the second half after Darren Fletcher had missed a penalty for the Scots on the stroke of half-time.

The victory keeps Scotland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012 alive and 21-year-old Aston Villa man Bannan was delighted to play such a crucial role.

"It's a marvellous feeling," Bannan told Sky Sports.

"This is my first competitive game and after playing in the friendlies to get out there and start at Hampden, it's what dreams are made of.

"It's a great result for us. We knew what it was going to be, a tough game, and we got what we came for.

"To get the three points is a big result and hopefully we can kick on from there."

After controversy raged over a penalty awarded against Scotland and one not given to them in the draw against the Czech Republic on Friday, Fletcher got his chance from the spot after a bizarre handball from Tadas Labukas but saw his spot-kick saved on the stroke of half-time.

Bannan said the players kept their heads up through the break.

"At times (you can stop believing) but you can't have a spell like that or it won't come," he said.

"You just have to keep going for it and to be fair 'Naisy' has got a great finish to get the breakthrough.

"On a good day it would have been three or four and plain sailing from there, but at 1-0 we've defended well and got what we came for."

Don Cowie and David Goodwillie were also making their first competitive starts, and Bannan believes it points to a bright future.

"There' a big squad and everybody's good enough to be here or they wouldn't be picked," he said.

"The three of us got picked today hoping to play well and perform and I think the three of us have done that."
