Villarreal have confirmed the signing of defender Cristian Zapata from Udinese.

The 25-year-old was a reported target for Liverpool and Arsenal but shunned a move to the Premier League in favour of a switch to Spain.

Zapata helped Udinese finish fourth in Serie A last term and leaves the Italian side with their blessings.

Signed

"Udinese can confirm the transfer of Columbian Cristian Eduardo Zapata Valencia to Spanish side Villarreal," said a statement on the Udinese website.

"The club would like to put on record their thanks for the professionalism he showed during his six years with us and wish him all the best for his career."

Zapata has signed a five-year deal and will be a welcomed addition to the squad.
