Belfast moved seven points clear at the top of the Elite League after they recorded a 3-2 shoot-out success over the Braehead Clan on Friday.

Robert Dowd netted the game-winner to give the Giants an extra point and make amends for their shock 4-1 loss to the same opponents back on December 27.

The first period had ended in stalemate, the visitors having more of the chances as they fired in 13 shots on the home net.

The Giants finally opened the scoring at 23.04 as Aaron Clarke put the puck past an unsighted Jaakko Suomalainen, who made 37 saves in total on the night.

Tjhe Clan were back on level terms at 28.50 with a powerplay goal from player/coach Drew Bannister, and at the end of the second period the two teams were still locked together at 1-1.

It was Braehead who struck next though, recent signing Mike Wirll scoring his first goal for the club at 45.26, only for Belfast to equalise through Paul Deniset, who was on hand to net at the back post.

Jordan Krestanovich missed a glorious chance to win the game for the Clan at the end of regulation, somehow shooting straight at the netminder when it seemed easier to score, meaning overtime was required.

With no further goals, it came down to penalty shots to decide the outcome. Both teams scored twice before Dowd, with his second attempt, clinched it for Doug Christiansen's side.
