Jack Laugher: Victory in Southend
Jack Laugher kicked off his 2012 season in commanding fashion with victory in the men's one-metre springboard at the British Gas National Cup in Southend.
The City of Leeds diver dropped marks after missing his entry on an inward two-and-a-half somersaults piked but recovered over his next four dives to take gold with a score of 384.60.
"That was the highest score that I have achieved on one metre," the 16-year-old said. "The one metre was about building up to my main event the three metre tomorrow and I think that I've blown the cobwebs away today."
Chris Mears (Southampton Diving) won silver with a total of 366.95 and Ben Swain (City of Sheffield) took bronze.
In the women's one-metre springboard, Crystal Palace's Rhea Gayle took gold with a total score of 267.20, while City of Leeds' Alicia Blagg won silver with 266.25.
Leeds City College Aquatics' Chloe Hurd won bronze with a score of 245.95.
The men's three-metre synchro saw Callum Johnstone and Matthew Roberts (City of Leeds) take the victory with a 20-point lead on the rest of field. The pair won with a score of 365.07.
Daniel Goodfellow (Cambridge Diving Team) and Sam Thornton (Bradford Espirit) took silver while bronze went to Josh Dowd (Leeds City College Aquatics) and Charles Calvert (City of Leeds).
Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch won the women's 10-metre synchro, their score of 313.14 enough to edge out Stacie Powell (Southampton Diving) and Rebecca Gallantree (City of Leeds).
