Sir Alex Ferguson: United boss still excited about Liverpool games
Sir Alex Ferguson insists the fixtures against Liverpool are still the biggest for Manchester United, despite the emergence of other rivals.
The two clubs are the most successful in the country and have enjoyed a competitive rivalry for decades.
Last season, United surpassed Liverpool's haul of 18 league titles, while the Reds from Merseyside can still hold claim to being the most successful English club in Europe.
Over the last decade Arsenal and Chelsea have battled against United for supremacy in the Premier League, while Manchester City have developed as title challengers this season and currently top the table.
Progress
Yet for Ferguson, the games against Liverpool still retain that added aura of mystique.
"You cannot dismiss the progress City are making completely, but at the moment the Liverpool game is still the one," he said ahead of Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie between the two clubs.
"The atmosphere at Anfield is terrific. You can work all your life to a point where you are challenged.
"Our results at Liverpool in the last two or three years have not been great, but both clubs will always have their moments, but it is such a great rivalry."
