The quarterback battle in Tennessee remains wide open after Jake Locker struggled in his first start for the Titans.
The Titans saw off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-7 at Raymond James Stadium but Locker, who is aiming to usurp veteran Matt Hasselbeck, completed only 4-of-11 passes for 21 yards, including an interception.
Hasselbeck went four-of-five for 29 yards in a brief outing, while Tennessee running back Chris Johnson was in good form with a pair of touchdowns.
Matt Stafford threw two touchdowns as the Detroit Lions claimed a 27-12 win over the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.
Stafford finished with 184 passing yards and receiver Calvin Johnson, who led the NFL in receiving yards last season, had five catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.
Blackmon debut
Maurice Jones-Drew remained a notable absentee but the Jacksonville Jaguars secured a 27-24 success against the New Orleans Saints.
Running back Jones-Drew is holding out on the Jaguars in a contract dispute but wide receiver Justin Blackmon, the Jaguars' first-round draft pick who also missed the start of training camp before agreeing terms, marked his debut with four receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Cam Newton sparkled in the opening quarter of the Carolina Panthers' 23-17 triumph over the Miami Dolphins.
Newton completed eight-of-11 passes for 119 yards, including a touchdown strike to DeAngelo Williams, as the Panthers raced into a 17-0 lead.
Also on Friday evening, the Arizona Cardinals edged out the Oakland Raiders 31-27 in Phoenix, while the Minnesota Vikings prevailed 36-14 over the Buffalo Bills.
