Andy Roddick stormed into the second round of the US Open with a 6-2 6-2 6-2 victory over Fabrice Santoro.

Roddick, the eighth seed at Flushing Meadows, required just 87 minutes to demolish his veteran French opponent under the floodlights on Arthur Ashe.

The American fired a total of 41 winners, including 15 aces, to book a second-round date with Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis.

"I felt good. That's the best I've felt in four, five months," said Roddick, who has been hampered by a shoulder injury for much of the season.

"Something about this place always gets me energised."

Solution

Roddick, the champion in New York in 2003, has recruited US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe as his temporary coach after his older brother John decided it was time to end their partnership.

"It was the obvious, best short-term solution for me right now," Roddick said about turning to McEnroe.

"I figure he was someone who knew my game and my personality."

On his second-round opponent, he added: "Gulbis serves a little bit bigger. He is a little bit streaky.

"I have to be ready for that moment that he takes a little break mentally."
