Top Ten: Strange Strikes

Last updated: 22nd March 2008

With numerous crazy goals from around the world flying into the back of the net all the time, skysports.com breaks down which are just a little bit crazier than others.

1. Vanderlei (Cruzeiro 0 ATLETICO MINEIRO 4, April 2007)

An extraordinary lapse of concentration by Cruzeiro goalkeeper Fabio allowed Atletico Mineiro striker Vanderlei to score the fourth goal in the Belo Horizonte derby. After conceding the third goal, Fabio was still looking for the ball in the net and had his back to play as Atletico scored again. He apparently failed to notice as Cruzeiro kicked off with a different ball and passed it backwards. The ball was intercepted by Vanderlei who scored into an undefended goal. A furious Fabio then picked two balls out of the net and remonstrated with the referee.

2. Peter Enckelman (Birmingham 3 ASTON VILLA 0, September 2002)

With his team trailing 1-0 to their arch-rivals from across the city, the last thing Villa needed was to gift their opponents a goal. And that is exactly what they did. Olof Mellberg took a throw-in from the left but Enckelman somehow managed to miss-control the ball and it rolled into the net. Villa's Finnish keeper claimed he did not get a touch but referee David Elleray awarded the goal.

3. Tomas Brolin (Sheffield Wednesday 6 LEEDS 2 December 1995)

Brolin's unhappy spell at Elland Road was an unmitigated disaster and the Swede's form in front of goal was typified by the way he opened his Leeds account. With United trailing 3-0, Gary Kelly crossed for Brolin to head goalwards and challenge keeper Kevin Pressman for the ball. The ball hit Pressman then Brolin and was rolling in until Wednesday defender Steve Nicol cleared it off the line, only to hit Brolin on the head as he lay on the ground and go into the net.

4. Dion Dublin (COVENTRY 2 Newcastle 2, November 1997)

Dublin gave his side the lead with a cheeky piece of finishing. There appeared to be little danger when Newcastle keeper Shay Given collected a cross from Gary McAllister after being put under pressure by Dublin. But then Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Given appeared to forget all about Dublin, whose momentum after the challenge had carried him out of play behind the goalline. Given rolled the ball out in preparation to make a long clearance but then Dublin came back onto the pitch, whipped the ball away from the Newcastle player and turned it into an empty net.

5. Gary Crosby (NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1 Manchester City 0, March 1990)

Similar to Dublin's goal but even more ingenious. The Forest winger was waiting behind Andy Dibble when the City keeper picked up the ball. As Dibble held it out on his outstretched hand deciding what to do Crosby nipped around the keeper, nodded the ball clear and rolled it into the empty net.

6. Gary Sprake (Liverpool 2 LEEDS 0, 1967)

Probably one of the most well-known goalkeepers - for the wrong reasons. Sprake attempted to throw the ball out to team-mate Willie Bell but at the last moment changed his mind, only succeeding in hurling it into his own net.

7. Stan Collymore (Blackburn 2 LIVERPOOL 3, February 1996)

The Ewood Park groundsmen were left cringing when Collymore's seemingly harmless effort caught a wicked divot to completely deceive poor Tim Flowers. The Rovers keeper had his body shape set to collect the low effort, but at the last second it flicked off the turf past Flowers and into the net.

8. Tony Popovic (Portsmouth 3 CRYSTAL PALACE 1, September 2004)

Popovic managed a quite spectacular own goal in Palace's clash against Portsmouth. Pompey's Steve Stone whipped in a cross from the right which Popovic attempted to clear with a flick of his heel. It backfired, though, and the ball deflected off his heel to loop into the far corner, dropping in off the post.

9. Roberto Dinamite (BRAZIL 3 Poland 1, June 1978)

An incredible sequence of events eventually led to Dinamite making it 3-1. After some skilful work at the by-line, the ball was worked to the penalty spot where a low effort cannoned off the post. Poland failed to clear and Brazil smashed another effort goalbound which too rebounded off the woodwork. A brief period of play then saw the South Americans hit the post once more, before Dinamite finally rifled home, finishing with aplomb.

10. Gianluca Vialli (Slovan Bratislava 0 CHELSEA 2, 1997)

Vialli notched an absurd goal in Chelsea's Cup Winners' Cup second leg. Bratislava keeper Miroslav Konig lined himself up for a long ball up field, with Vialli innocently walking back towards the halfway. Konig put his foot through the ball, but the unthinkable happened when his kick bashed into Vialli's backside before rebounding off the underside of the bar and dropping into the goal.

what about dean saunders for us against port vale in 1998. the ball was trickling down the wing, saunders gave chase, the keeper came out to knock it out of play, as the keeper starts runing back to his goal, saunders throws the ball onto the keepers back then strikes it home from 25 yards!! totally bizzare and we won 2-1!! wahey!

What about Claus Jenson (Charlton) when the ball hit him in the face from near enough the half way line. Funniest goal ever.

I seem to remember Kenny Dalglish scoring an unusual goal for Liverpool in the dim and distant past. The opposition goalie was standing there bouncing the ball after a Liverpool attack had come to nothing, and Dalglish came sliding in under the goalie's hand (and presumably his radar!), timing it just right to take the ball into the net.

2 things. first of all Daniel Chillingworths goal for the O's against Rushden a few seasons back is the oddest goal ive ever seen - spooned volley that everyone including the ref and the both teams thought had gone out for a corner (ref even signalled for one) then the ball just somehow dropped into the goal out of knowhere. and i like how this is about the craziest goals yet someone still has to come on and post about how arsenal are going to be great next year.... why post that on here really?
