Micah Richards believes Manchester City could be challenging for a place in Europe this season.

City brought in an abundance of fresh faces in the pre-season under new manager Sven Goran Eriksson and they were expected to take time to settle.

However, City have begun their season in style and topped the Premier League table before they were toppled following their first defeat of the campaign at Arsenal last Saturday.

Richards has revealed that City's initial target for the season was a top half finish, but the star defender has refused to rule out a top six spot.

"The aim was to finish in the top half," Richards told Zoo magazine. "That's still our aim.

"We're close to challenging for Europe. We were close a few years ago and now we have a better squad. Let's see."
