Forssell: Successful op

Birmingham could have Finnish striker Mikael Forssell back playing within three weeks after he underwent a successful hernia operation on Tuesday.

Forssell suffered the setback during the Carling Cup tie at Blackburn but could be back in training within seven to ten days.

And the Blues hope the former Chelsea player will not miss many games because of the imminent two-week international break.

City assistant manager Eric Black said: "Mikael had the operation on Tuesday and everything went well. He's gone back to Finland for a few days now to rest and recover.

Training

"He has a slight tear which had opened up a little bit but, with modern surgical techniques, it can be as little as three weeks before somebody is playing again.

"We hope to have him back training in the next seven to 10 days and hopefully he won't miss too many games with the international break going on for two weeks."

Forssell looked to have put his last three years of injury problems behind him as he looked sharp in pre-season and scored on the opening day of the campaign at Chelsea.

Birmingham will hope he returns sooner rather than later to provide competition for Cameron Jerome, Olivier Kapo and Garry O'Connor as Rowan Vine is out on loan at QPR.
