David Moyes believes Everton have closed the gap on local rivals Liverpool during his reign at Goodison Park.

Moyes was appointed Toffees boss back in 2002 and has guided the club to three top-seven finishes during his five-year tenure.

Everton claimed four points off Liverpool last term including an impressive 3-0 success over The Reds on home soil.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's 177th league Merseyside derby, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1, Moyes believes Everton have a good chance of more success.

"When I took over the gulf was vast," Moyes told the Daily Mirror. "We were not in a very strong position when I took over to win derby games.

"Now we are in a strong position to win derby matches and we have shut the gap a little bit.

"In five full seasons, we've had three top-seven finishes and been in the Champions League. That is a sign of our progress.

"We're trying to life the club to the point where they were in the Eighties, at the forefront of English football."
