William Gallas can see no reason why he will not fulfil his promise of delivering silverware as captain this season.

Thierry Henry's move to Barcelona in the summer saw the captain's armband passed to Gallas - as Arsene Wenger elected to overlook the long-standing

Gilberto and Kolo Toure for the honour.

The Frenchman endured a tough start to the season as two months on the sidelines with a groin injury rendered him a frustrated spectator.

But now back in the side and playing well, Gallas feels he is growing in the role of captain and is backing his team-mates to keep on maturing and at the campaign's close, have plenty to celebrate.

Captain's promise

"When Arsene told me I was to be the captain, I told myself I will try to do my best to try to win some trophies for the club, and to help my team," the 30-year-told the club's official website.

"I try to speak with the players when something is wrong and I am very pleased with all the players because they are doing so well.

"All of the young players [have impressed me] because at their age, I did not have that quality."

Invincibles

Such has been Arsenal's imperious form thus far this season there have been inevitable comparisons with the 'Invincibles', who won the league title in 2003/2004, but Gallas insists the current crop are chasing trophies not records.

Arsenal have not been beaten in 23 matches and while they are still some way short of the Invincibles' record of 49, Gallas is not overly concerned.

"We just want to win every match, but for us it is more important to win something this year," said the Arsenal skipper.

"If we can beat that record, then why not? But it is not what we are thinking about.

"Only winning trophies can give you the satisfaction."
