Vassell: Manager backing

Sven Goran Eriksson believes there is still room for Darius Vassell in his Manchester City side.

Vassell has struggled to make an impact during Eriksson's reign thus far, having made just one Premier League start this season.

The Swedish tactician is a fan of the 27-year-old's ability, involving him regularly during his time in charge of England.

And Eriksson has backed Vassell to work his way into his starting XI, hinting that he will not necessarily utilise him as a striker.

"He scored five goals in training on Friday," he told The Sun.

Pace and technique

"Darius still has the qualities that got him into the England team. He has the pace and good technique and can play in various roles."

Vassell admitted that competition for places is fierce in the City squad, but expressed his determination to earn a place in the side.

"You can't always start every game now because there are so many good players in the team," he said.

"But I want to make some sort of mark here and I'll fight to do that."
