Off: Augustin Binya is shown the red card following his tackle on Scott Brown

Uefa are to investigate the tackle which forced Celtic midfielder Scott Brown out of the Champions League game with Benfica.

Augustin Binya was shown a straight red card by Swedish referee Martin Hansson for the challenge with five minutes of the match remaining at Celtic Park.

Afterwards, Brown accused his opponent of trying to break his leg and urged Uefa to take further action against the Benfica player.

Binya faces at least a one-match ban and, because he was sent off, the governing body will automatically investigate the incident and decide later this month whether he should face further sanctions.

Control

A Uefa spokesman confirmed: "We haven't received the reports of the referee or the match delegate yet but we always open a disciplinary case for a red card.

"This will be on the agenda of the next control and disciplinary body meeting on November 15.

"There will be at least a one-match ban but all red cards are judged individually so we will need to wait until the meeting to see if there will be a further ban."

After watching the game on television, I am in no doubt that Binya had intent to harm Scott. For the development of the game, this should be punished severely as a lesson to others. Win or lose players should not damage the reputation of the game by such barbaric tackles.

Shocking tackle, needs to be banned for at least a month. Not apologising only adds to the insult..

absolutely disgusting! any player that deliberately goes out to inflict serious injury on a "fellow professional" whether british (english) or european should face the consequences of their actions. An idea would be to deduct points from the club of the offender. It would certainly make them think twice before going in with challenges like the one on Scott Brown.

Unbelievable tackle. Generally when really bad challenges go in, the players feet are at least aiming for the ball, but binya hasn't got the ball on his mind. Should be banned for 3-6 months and fined some wages, otherwise other nasty players will feel they can get away with challenges like it. if scott browns career HAD been over i think binya would be in a lot more trouble, possibly with the police. You look at what cantona did, this is on a par with that and he got nailed.

Binya has come out in the papers today refusing to give an apology for his disgusting tackle on Brown. If as mentioned in this blog it had been a British paper he would have been lambasted in every paper in the country. One rule for one......

This tackle was halfway up his shin, I read what people are saying about Gerrard, Neville and the like with their 'horror' tackles, and to be fair some do go unpunished, but this was a definate attempt to snap his leg as far as i am concerned

Archibald Lees (Celtic fan) says...

The real football fan wants to see the game played as it should be and there is latitude for contact which is legal, scott does play to the fullest extent of that latitude but i have never seen him deliberately go over the top or intentionally maim someone. Mcnees contribution earlier on in this blog is nothing short of ridiculous. Mcnee is quite obviously someone with no real feeling for the beautiful game football can be. Mcnee either does not realise the full potential of a lunge like that or does not care. A certain Ian Durrant never got to realise his full potential as a player because a similar tackle finished him. Scotland certainly missed the atistry and skill Ian did show prior to that incident.

If the equivilent of this indicent had happened in any other profession, be it policing, medicine etc they would have been out of a job straight away. Football is a physical game granted, but this is ludacris. They should make an exaple out of him and maybe other players will see theyre not above the law

Iain Macdonald (Celtic fan) says...

Nobody disputes that Scott Brown plays the game hard and never shirks from a 50/50 contest. However, if Binya was being tried in a court of law then the crucial factor would be "intent". Was this a 50/50 tackle or was there deliberate intent to injure the other player ? I don't think that anyone who has watched the footage could honestly argue that he didn't deliberately attempt to injure Brown. Hopefully, his punishment will fit his crime !

As a Benfica fan and father of three kids attending Benfica Football School, I feel I must put in a word to say that I agree that Binyas challenge was atrocious, but I think the fact there has been no public reaction from anyone at Benfica is even more shocking. By the way, I really am a Spireite since my childhood and still follow them from here.

Disgusting! If Scott Brown had made the 'tackle' then he would already be condemned, lets hope UEFA finally start treating mainland European teams the same as they do against the British ones.

How can this man get away with such a horrible tackle on scott this is certainly not what we want to be seeing in football and this moron should be banned for life not just for the rest of the season. It was good to see that scott was ok and that he can help his club and his country to success.

Tony Bray (Portsmouth fan) says...

I am absolutely appalled by the challenge. It is not just about the fact that it could have broken his leg. It could have ruined his career and his whole future. If that sort of thing had happened off the pitch it could be classed as assault.

Andre E (Arsenal fan) says...

On one side many British players say that football's a man's game and that players should be able to handle the physical side of the game. But when it happens to a British player, it's dirty, cheating, career ending etc. How many times have you seen Gary Neville or Steven Gerrard or Bolton kick the lights out of players, use the "tactical foul" or the two footed lunge? This behaviour (including this tackle) is part of a wider issue in football where physicality is seen as superior to technique, and in this respect, British teams are as guilty, if not moreso, than any other teams in Europe

Greg Mckay (Rangers fan) says...

Duncan Ferguson was jailed for assault whilst playing for Rangers, isn't this the same?? Therefore i think an incident should be dealt with in court, it would stop players who think they are "untouchable" and above the law.

in response to george mcnees comments ref. scott brown. what a rediculous statement 'justice was done'. The difference between scott's tackle against the Shaktar player and the one on him by Binya, is that scott made no intention to harm the player..it was a 50-50 ball, as for Binya's tackle, that was deliberate intent to inflict serious injury. I suspect Mr. McNee is not a Birmingham fan at all making comments like that and that in actual fact he is a Rangers fan.

Reminiscent of Roy Keane's horror tackle a few years ago.

Grant Gallacher (Celtic fan) says...

I was at the game and that tackle was nothin short of assault, The case shoud be infront of a court never mind a UEFA control board, Binya should be punished with a lengthy break from football considering he tried to give Scott Brown an indefinate spell out, an idiotic way of showing a total lack of control of his own frustration at what has to be said was a very poor performance on his part! An example needs to be made for the good of the game!

Brown may be hard, but he would not go out to seriously harm a fellow professional!

Bryan Park (Celtic fan) says...

George McNee, kicking during a game is one thing, yellow cards are dished out for that, sometimes reds. Trying to intentionally break a mans leg and maybe end his carreer, what kind of justice do you call that? Know anything about humanity buddy cause you know nothing about football.
