Gerrard: Supporting quota

Steven Gerrard has given his backing to the prospect of a quota system limiting the number of foreign players in the Premier League.

Following England's stuttering Euro 2008 qualifying campaign it has been suggested the future of the national team could be hampered by the increasing number of top-flight foreign imports.

The Premier League is often touted as offering the 'best' football in the world, but it has been implied that this is at a cost to the England side.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is a firm believer in a quota system in Europe's top leagues, which would restrict the number of overseas players at any one club.

Opportunity

It is then hoped this would increase the opportunities offered to home grown talent, and the proposal has already gained support from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Reading boss Steve Coppell.

Gerrard recognises the qualities foreign players bring to the Premier League, but he also believes the future of England's national side could be harmed.

"I think there is a risk that there are too many foreign players coming over, which will affect our national team eventually, if it's not doing so now," Gerrard told a press conference on Sky Sports News.

"I'm sure it (a quota) will definitely help our national team, if that's the case, and we want as many home grown players playing in the league as possible.

Suffer

"As an England player we want top players involved in the squad and I'm sure that will help.

"I'm all for getting good English players through. It is important that we keep producing.

"I think it is pointless having the best league in the world if our national team is going to suffer in the long run."
