Billy Davies is looking to the future after his time as Derby County manager ended on Monday.

The former Preston boss left the Pride Park club following yet another weekend defeat - this time at home to Chelsea.

Despite guiding The Rams to promotion via the play-offs last term at the first time of asking, Davies' side have endured a miserable campaign, winning just one of their 14 Premier League games to date.

Begrudge

Davies had only just outlined which players he wanted to bring to the club in January, although the 43-year-old has not begrudged the club's decision for the pair to separate early.

"We've agreed mutually to part our ways," he told Sky Sports News. "It's football. We know the situation.

"It's time to move on. This is not the time to discuss anymore. It's time to move onto something new.

"I don't know what there is for the future. I'll wait and see.

"At this point I'd like to thank very much the staff and players and the fans, who have been magnificent.

"Everyone's been a pleasure to work with and I've enjoyed the great times I've had at Derby."

Proud

Despite a relatively poor start to the season with Derby, Davies believes he can be proud of his work with the club.

"I'm very, very proud walking out of these gates with what's been achieved. I'm walking out with my head held high," he added.

"The one thing I can guarantee is that Billy Davies will bounce back and be a much better and stronger manager for this experience."

Big Mistake!!! a premier league football club can't survive without good quality players who add stability to any club. This can only be done with heavy financial investment, which must come from the chairman and the board of directors. Billy Davies did highlight on numerous occasions from the start of the season the need for investment to bring at least four key players to Derby

Billy Davies has all the attributes to be yet another great manager to come out of Scotland. If the Derby board can't see it and then it is their loss and someone else's gain. If Birmingham City are looking for a new manager they should look no further.

Thanks Billy for making the club stable financially by getting us promoted. I had no expectations for the season, only to enjoy it (even if we weere getting stuffed) and go down with the club in a great position to come back up and stay up. Can't think of a better manager to do that than Billy Davies. It seems that the reward for an unexpected promotion and a £50 million pound pay day for the club is the sack. Who'd be a football manager? I wish Billy all the best for the future and hope that we don't make a rash and hasty decision on his successor

Complete shock to me that Billy Davies was sacked. in my opinion he is one of the best younger managers out there who should have been given until the end of the season. if mcleish leaves scotland for birmingham then Billy Davies should be considered as the next manager for scotland.

This is a sad day for Derby and for football. Just over 18 months ago we were contemplating life in league 1. we escaped by the skin of our teeth and now we are back in the big time, playing against some of the best players on the planet, and the reason for that can be summed up in two words, BILLY DAVIES. After what he has done for Derby, he should have been given the freedom of the city, instead he is sold down the river for yet another 30 pieces of silver. No Derby fan likes to see them losing by the 4, 5 and 6 -0 's we have seen, but what did you expect, Champions League, a trophy or two? Get real folks. I have been following Derby since the Clough days, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly, but today I think is an all time low. Who is going to come in and do as well as Billy? The more important question may be - After todays fiasco, WHO IS GOING TO WANT TO TRY?

You could see this was going to happen from the minute the final whistle blew at Wembley. You were the better side on the day but most pundits agreed we probably were a better bet to compete in the Premier. Always felt there was a row rumbling behind the scenes, and even though the Chairman will get a lot of stic for an apparent knee jerk reaction, he does seem a difficult bloke to manage, and put the final nail in his coffin going public on Staurday night to SSN. In all cases no one man can be bigger than the club and from the outside looking in, that's what he thought he was.

A shame. On the TV screens at least Billy was a refreshing change, acknowledging the fact that sometime his side were lacking rather than seeking to blame the officials all the while. Decorum and judgement shown throughout this difficult season, for which he ought to be commended. I can understand the club not wanting to spend mega-money, particulary with relegation a possibility, as there would be a substantial drop in income the following season, and parachute payments would only go so far towards alleviating that. However investing in the right players and begining to build in the way that (dare I say as a Luton Fan) Aidy Boothroyd has done with Watford or Alan Pardew at Charlton. Chucking money at it in a forlorn effort to stay up is pointless, but laying the foundations for a promising future is not.

Mr Chairman. Do not kid yourself about knowing football. Stick to the boardroom and talk money and let the managers talk football. The DEARBY PLAYERS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Not one derby player would be considered for any other premier league side. Relationship between club and manager broke down fair enough. Players good enough? I dont think so. It might be wise to take his wise words on board-buy 6 players in Jan ready for next year in the Championship and maybe have a crack in the Premier League in 2009/10.

Big mistake Derby, Billy brought you from nowhere to the prem. I hope you get Steve Mclaren and Billy comes to the Blues

Doug Sallis (Preston North End fan) says...

What a disgraceful move by the Derby board. As a Preston fan, Billy turned us from mid-table no hopers to a play off final in the space of half a season. He then got us to the play offs again the following year and Derby promoted the next season. If only the Preston chairman, Derek Shaw, had waited a week or so before appointing the unproven Alan Irvine as boss, Billy could have come back to Deepdale and sorted out the mess we're in now. I bet with him in charge, we'd have finished mid-table this year and got to the play offs again next time around. The guy is hard working, dedicated and knows his football inside out. Did the Derby board think he was going to get them into the Champions League this season or something? There is still two thirds of the season to go, plenty of points to play for and the Rams are not that far behind. I hope Billy goes to Birmingham and they stay up at Derby's expense.

The world of football gets more stupid by the day! First Rafa is on verge of losing job - wait a minute aren't they unbeaten still and what was that minor trophy they won a couple of seasons ago? Then today poor Billy Davies, yes they are a very poor side but stick with him he worked magic last season and this is how they repay the 50 million he earnt them with promotion, absolute joke. Shame on Derby they have lost a good manager and a good man!

Laurence White (Derby County fan) says...

I'm very sad to see Billy go, I don't think the new man at the top or the board has enough experiance to make such a decision. Billy picked us up from the scrap heap and gave us something to shout about. Remember we were bottom of the championship and playing 15 year old kids. It was a 3 year plan and he should have had that time. you can't blame the manager this time he proved he could do a very good job. its all about the money at this level and if you don't give the financial support needed you can only expect to go back down. With him we would have come back stronger after another year in the Championship (2007/2008) next year and I belive we would have come back up (2008/2009) then been in a position to stay up. I'm sure there are a number of fans who will be very upset. Financial stability is very important and we DCFC fans know it was not going to happen over night. I'm sure most of us knew we were going down but would be back with Billy and his coaching team. I'm also sorry for his No 2 who left Preston to join Billy I hope the new manager remembers this before he gets his own man in. GOOD LUCK BILLY YOU DID A FANTASTIC JOB THANKS A (50) MILLION........

Joe Pilgrim (Liverpool fan) says...

What Derby needs is experience, not Paul Ince. For me only one man fits the bill, Paul Jewell, he's had a short break out of the game, but he is the man who has just faced a relegation battle and he survived. He's done it once and Derby could do with asking him to do it again.

Chris Gregory (Derby County fan) says...

Billy started from scratch and got us into the premier league, and we cant thank him any more, but he hasnt spent the money wisely and he was expecting us to get relegated before the premiership campaigne even started.i beleive that the best manager for the derby job is stuart pearce, because he has the passion and belief that derby need. also i want steve maclaren to come to the club and maybe he could bring the bauld eagle back (jim smith) and we can climb the premier league like old times, or one more manager could be nigel clough and he could hopefully set out the same type of mind set as the legend (brian clough). i think that pearson is the best chairman that Derby has hasd in a long time as he is very passionate and has alot of belief in the players. Come on Derby!!!!

Paul Simmonds (West Ham United fan) says...

Shocking! After all Billy has done for Derby. What exactly were they expecting this season? did they back him with big money to make big signings? he had to make do with a Championship squad in the premierleague....mission impossible. Birmingham calling for Davies?

Tony Hurd (Leicester City fan) says...

Just goes to show how fickle football is these days. This guy has done wonders for Derby in a short space of time & this is the thanks he gets. It's ironic that the board who never backed him with serious transfer funds are all still sitting in their highly paid ivory towers. If they were smart, they would have studied the ups & downs that Curbishley went through to establish Charlton as a consistent Premiership side. Also, have the Watford board knee jerk reacted? NO...& they are reaping the benefits now, because they realise that the only way to establish a side in the Premiership without serious money is to work tirelessley like Aidy Boothroyd is doing at present. Good luck to you Billy Davies...I'm sure that with your talents, you'll end up with a club whose directors really know what it takes to survive in the harsh world of the Premiership. Mark Painter (Everton fan) says...

Once again a typical response from a board under pressure. As an Everton supporter I have a totally un biased opinion on Derby County's current plight. The team was always going to struggle in the Premiership even with investment which they didnt seem to do. It shows a total lack of faith in a manager that six months ago defyed the odds and actually got the rams promoted in the first place. If Billy Davies had failed in the playoffs last season he would currently still be in a job probably taking all the plaudits for getting Derby near to the summit of the Championship. It would be nice if some clubs boards showed a bit of long term faith in their managers. I know football is a money game now but it will take more than money to save Derby this season so what is the point in these knee jerk reactions. Another manager is going to come in a spend some money and let me guess buy some more second rate foreign players on extortionate wages because UK players are so expensive. There we have part of the supposed reason behind the failures of the National sides. But that is another argument.

Billy Smith (Rangers fan) says...

As Billy Davies said himself, he is still working with players who are not good enough for the Premier League, so how is he supposed to compete and succeed in this league without proper investment in the playing staff ? Yet again it is a case of a team reaching the Premier League (taking all the financial benefits that go with it) and expecting the manager to keep them up and if not then it's Goodbye but thanks for your efforts we'll keep the money!!!

Derby should have kept Bily Davies , losing to Chelsea was very obvious, They are very luck to be in the Premier League. At least they are improving because they did not lose with a wide margin. Hopefully they wont engage the services of Steve Mclaren
