Whitehead: Sorry

Dean Whitehead has apologised to Sunderland supporters following Saturday's 7-1 defeat to Everton.

Roy Keane's men were completely overrun at Goodison Park, as The Toffees secured a memorable victory.

And Whitehead, who was making his comeback after three months out on the sidelines, admits the performance was unacceptable.

"It's difficult to put into words, it's hard to take. I can only apologise to the fans that paid their money and travelled to Everton," Sunderland's captain told the club's official website.

No excuses

"It was unacceptable and we can't offer much in the way of excuses.

"We caught Everton on a good day, they played well and credit to them. But to concede seven goals is embarrassing.

"It was hard for us to take, but I know it was just as hard for the fans.

"We have to learn from it. We have strong people in the dressing room and there were a few words said after the game.

Bounce back

"We have belief and I'm confident we can learn from this and bounce back."

The Black Cats host Derby County on Saturday, and Whitehead believes that the clash is the perfect opportunity to make up for their disastrous display.

"It makes next weekend's game even more important. We need to win and show that Saturday was not a true reflection of us," he added.

"We will try to make it up to the fans. We're big enough to bounce back."
