Edman: Could leave Rennes soon

Rennes will allow Premier League target Erik Edman to leave once a replacement has been lined up.

The former Tottenham Hotspur full-back appears likely to return to English football before the close of the transfer window.

He has rejected an extension to his Rennes contract, which expires in the summer, and is tipped to sign for Wigan Athletic.

Reports in France claim the Sweden international has been offered a two-and-a-half year deal to rejoin former Rennes team-mate Mario Melchiot at the JJB Stadium.

The French side's coach Guy Lacombe has confirmed talks have been held regarding Edman's departure, but wants to secure a replacement before rubber-stamping the deal.

Imperative

"It is true that there have been talks about his departure," Lacombe told the club's official website.

"It is imperative that we find a defender in his position before we allow Erik's transfer.

"I think we all agree on that. He wants that and the club does as well.

"It is a matter of circumstances. I think it will be done in time."
