Matthew Upson is hoping his form for West Ham United will catch the eye of new England coach Fabio Capello.

The centre-half has overcome a wretched start to his Hammers career to rediscover his best form this season.

He is now targeting a recall to the England squad, having not featured for his country in over three years.

Following Capello's appointment as coach, Upson feels his chances of inclusion for next month's friendly with Switzerland have been boosted.

Level playing field

"I've got personal goals I want to get to and international honours is certainly on that list," said Upson in the Daily Telegraph.

"It's a level playing field now and Capello appears to be a manager who will take everything at face value.

"He seems to go on form, so it would be nice to get a fresh look and emphasis on the setup.

"I think my form's been very consistent and I'm working as hard as I've ever worked. I'm as focused as I've ever been."

Upson is also enthused by the challenge of forcing his way into the squad given the competition for places in central defence.

He added: "It would just make my achievement even greater if I do get into the squad, so whether or not we've got a lot of good centre-halves it's up to me to produce my best form and be as good as everyone else."
