Gattuso: A night to forget
Milan crashed out of the Coppa Italia after drawing 1-1 with Catania in a game that saw both Andrea Sottil and Gennaro Gattuso sent-off.
Catania progress courtesy of a 2-1 win in the first leg at the San Siro, with Milan never at their best in an oft ill-tempered affair.
Vargas gave Catania the lead just past the ten minute mark when he dispatched a stunning 30-yard volley after Milan failed to clear a corner.
Rossoneri youngster Alberto Paloschi got Milan back into the game when he scored a leveller but it was not to be as both sides had a man sent off.
Sottil went first for a professional foul, before Milan substitute Gattuso followed him for a second booking - having only been on the pitch 13 minutes.
Udinese won through to the quarter-finals courtesy of a last gasp victory at Palermo.
Floro Flores was the hero for Udinese as his 90th minute effort proved enough in what was an evenly contested tie.
Following a goalless first leg, Palermo started as favourites to progress on home soil - only to fail to break down a stubborn Udinese.
Fiorentina made home advantage count as they had too much for Ascoli in winning 2-0 on the night, 3-1 on aggregate.
Giampaolo Pazzini will be the toast of the Viola faithful as his double, in the 60th and 73rd minutes, ensured their progression.
Roma proved too good for Torino on the night as they won 4-0, to progress 5-3 on aggregate.
The capital club were made to wait until the hour mark to make the breakthrough, thanks to Amantino Mancini's strike.
Mancini's effort opened the floodgates, as a double from Francesco Totti and Ludovic Giuly's strike in the final minute got them through.
Another side to win 4-0 were Sampdoria, as they saw off Cagliari with consummate ease.
Emiliano Bonazzoli got them off to the best possible start in the fourth minute, before Luigi Sala, Angelo Palombo and Bonazzoli again broke Cagliari's brittle resolve.
