Robert Pires believes his injury problems at Villarreal will allow him to prolong his career at the club.

The 34-year-old former Arsenal winger has suffered two knee ligament injuries and spent much of his time at the club on the sidelines.

However, he believes this will actually prove to be an advantage as he bids to continue playing for the club next season.

Longevity

"I am a 34-year-old and it is all a state-of-mind matter," he told L'Equipe. "As long as you wake up with the desire to get hurt in training sessions, you can hold on.

"Staying here two years without playing due to injury keeps you younger. I have gained in longevity what I have lost in intensity.

"I would like to go on for one more year. I feel self-trust. I paid back the chairman for the trust he gave me.

"My future is not a matter of money. The most important thing is to feel at ease - me and my family - during the final years of my career.

"I believe the Villarreal officials are clever and we will find a solution."

Reports in Spain suggest Pires will request a two-year extension to his current deal.
