Bentley: Backed to start

Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes believes David Bentley should retain his place in England's side against France.

The former Arsenal youngster started for England in their 2-1 win over Switzerland in February in Fabio Capello's first game in charge.

Hughes felt Bentley gave a good account of himself against the Swiss and because of that should retain his place against Les Bleus.

"He made a case for himself the last time he played," said Hughes. "I thought he was one of the better players on that occasion.

"He has made a good start to the tenure of Mr Capello and he continues to play well."

Central role

Bentley has been in fine form of late for Rovers and Hughes sees no reason why the winger can not play through the middle for club and country.

"We put David in a more central role and he was able to dictate the play from there," he continued.

"He will always retain possession for you but looks to create and I thought his longer passing was excellent.

"He was always able to give us an outlet by releasing Jason Roberts or Roque (Santa Cruz)."
