Huth: Laid low

Middlesbrough defender Robert Huth has been forced to pull out of the Germany squad to face Switzerland.

Huth has returned to England after reporting to Germany's training camp with an ankle problem and team doctors have ruled him out of Wednesday's friendly with the Swiss.

The news is a blow for Huth as he has not played for Germany since the 2006 World Cup finals.

Huth has struggled with injury for the last few months, but had impressed Germany coach Joachim Low in recent weeks with some commanding displays for Boro.

The former Chelsea defender could face a fight to win a place in the Germany squad for Euro 2008 as the Swiss clash is the final warm-up game before Low names his squad for the finals this summer.

Low says the injury is not serious and he insists the door is not closed for Huth regarding winning a spot in his squad for Euro 2008.

"Our doctors looked at him and decided he couldn't play," said Low. "It's not a long-term injury though. He looks like he will be out for around ten to 15

days.

"Huth's chances are still intact though. We have analysed his recent games in England and seen some very good defensive performances, even against strong opponents like Arsenal.

"I have explained to him that the door is not closed and we will see how he gets on over the next few weeks."
